Summary

Stephen Mangan and Claire Skinner star in all five series of the popular BBC Radio 4 comedy drama.

Bill works as an economist in a right-wing institute giving succour to bankers and businessmen. Bella is a confirmed socialist who teaches yoga and waters the plants in Canary Wharf. Years ago they shared a flat before Bill got married and moved to America. Now he's back and feeling a little off-kilter, so he decides to rekindle his friendship with Bella.

Once a month they get together for lunch, where they talk about everything from politics to Proust, parenting and the perils of online dating. The only thing they never discuss is how much they love each other....

In Marcy Kahan's delightful 'platonic romantic comedy', we join Bill and Bella as they meet, eat and disagree about everything; and over the course of five series, we learn their hopes and dreams and listen in as their lives change direction and come together.

Very good but with one flaw.

Very good writing I couldn’t wait to hear what they had been up to next! One thing really let’s this collection down is the god awful theme song playing at the start and end of every episode.

It deserves 10 stars in each category

I absolutely loved listening to it all. The story line is relationship focused, light and totally engaging. The two actors Claire Skinner and Stephen Mangan are superb. They bring the story alive. It’s as if we’re in the same room observing them and eavesdropping on the chat. It’s been a joy from the first minute. Perfection. I need to research if the author has written other such scripts.

Charming in a very chill way

If you’re looking for laugh-out-loud comedy or thrilling action, this isn’t the show for you. However, it’s quite entertaining if you just want something low key. Every episode is a lunch between two old friends, so you get to see their lives develop third-hand as they argue, ramble, enthuse, and mourn to each other. They often make terrible, idiotic life decisions, but you find yourself rooting for them anyway because they seem like real people having real gossip sessions dishing about their real lives. Not a bad listen.
