Summary

Children need love. Parents need respect. It is as simple and complex as that! When frustrated with an unresponsive child, a parent doesn't declare, "You don't love me." Instead the parent asserts, "You are being disrespectful right now." A parent needs to feel respected, especially during conflicts. When upset a child does not whine, "You don't respect me." Instead, a child pouts, "You don't love me." A child needs to feel loved, especially during disputes. But here's the rub: An unloved child (or teen) negatively reacts in a way that feels disrespectful to a parent. A disrespected parent negatively reacts in a way that feels unloving to the child. This dynamic gives birth to the "Family Crazy Cycle." So how is one to break out of this cycle?

Bestselling author Emerson Eggerichs has studied the family dynamic for more than 30 years, having his Ph.D. in Child and Family Ecology. As a senior pastor for nearly two decades, Eggerichs builds on a foundation of strong biblical principles, walking the listener through an entirely new way to approach the family dynamic. For instance, God reveals ways to defuse the craziness with our children from preschooler to teen, plus how to motivate them to obey and how to deal with them when they don't. In the Bible, God has spoken specifically to parents on how to parent. This audiobook is about that revelation.

Must read for every parent and teacher

I loved the concepts and principles presented in this book. Read a little fast but could easily back up and listen again. I recommend this book to all parents and teachers. It's never too late to change the way we parent. Excellent book.

Most Effective Book Yet

I enjoyed the original Love and Respect but found it was even easier to absorb from the perspective of a parent - and to then use it as a spouse. As a parent it took me out of the position of my own hurts and made me feel responsible while providing some of the best tools I've ever picked up. Looking at it as a spouse then became so much clearer.

Thank you!

Excellent content...fair delivery

Where does Love and Respect in the Family rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The only reason I gave the performance a 2 was because the narrator is so monotone I had a difficult time listening to him. Jonathan Eggerichs doesn't have the inflection and variety that his dad does. Which was disappointing to me since I had a higher expectation going into this. Regardless, as I said in the headline...the material that Dr. Eggerichs presents is awesome! I highly recommend the content of his book!

How did the narrator detract from the book?

First parenting book I have finished!

I have a hard time finishing non-fiction audible so I listened at 1.5x speed which helped a lot! I feel like this book touched on my pain points as a mom. I power struggle with my son a lot. I felt that this book gave me some ideas to help him feel loved and less defensive. I liked it so much that my husband listened to it as well. It’s so nice for us to have advice we are both excited about. Thanks for a fantastic book!

It is very religious. I am Christian but I would consider it a different “brand” of Christianity than I am used to, but that was one of the best parts. I learned things about myself and Christianity having it taught in a different style than I am used to. This book has the potential to be life changing for me. Thank you again!

Incredible practical application to biblical truth in parenting

I was challenged and encouraged to see my parenting and children through the eyes of God and his grace and truth.

I’m not overly churchy- but this was still a wonderful book full of valuable info.

I grew up Christian and share a lot of these values. However I do not go to church anymore, but I do pray and believe in God.

I love the values and morals and references in this book, back to the Bible. Even if you’re not really churchy, you will take quality info from this. Especially in a world full of parents so willing to judge everything we do as parents.

We are all doing the best we can and give ourselves some grace and allow ourselves to grow to be better. No shame. I think this is a wonderful book and I’ve already recommended it to several others.

I’ve also read his book Love and Respect for couple and that’s amazing as well.

Gut Punch Revelation

Despite the fact that my husband and I, married for almost 14 years, read Love and Respect while we were engaged, I wish we had read this before we started having kids almost 13 years ago. It never occurred to me to reach my sons’ hearts with respect. I always tell them I love them and do my best to be a good mom, but discouraging their inner protector in the name of safety or talking too much when they just need quiet side by side time... absolute revelation and hopefully a revolution in my home.

Wonderful tool for our tool box in parenting!

Wonderful tools for a toolbox in parenting and so much more! I've listened to this twice already and each time the Lord shows me more and speaks to me more in regards to the things I need to work on and to show my family.
