Story
The death of one’s spirit should come with a great deal of noise: weeping and wailing, if not thunder or the roar of a fire. Elizabeth could not have imagined a spirit forced into darkness by something so mundane as the scratch of pen on paper. Elizabeth Bennet has been certain of many things in her life: her place in society, the love of her family, her ability to choose her own future, and her ability to accurately judge the character of those she meets. Three days after the Netherfield Ball, a near tragedy shakes that foundation.

Story
When Fitzwilliam Darcy makes an impetuous offer of marriage to Miss Elizabeth Bennet, he is convinced they have as good a chance as any for a harmonious life together. That is, until an overheard conversation changes everything, and Darcy realizes he is now joined in perpetuity to a woman who loathes the very sight of him. Elizabeth Bennet's expectations for matrimonial accord were never very high, having accepted Mr. Darcy's proposal in a fit of pique, not love. Still, she is determined to make the best of her situation. But life at Pemberley is not at all what she imagined.

Original Pride and Prejudice Variation
The story had some new premises, that I, as a jaded Janeite still enjoyed. Kay Bea is a new author to me, but I would definitely purchase other books written by her. However, the choice of narrator was underwhelming. His male voices, particularly Darcy’s, were rich and full. However, every single female voice was strained and slightly higher pitched, with an almost wooden lack of expression. Every sentence spoken by a female character was delivered with the same bland, monotonous cadence.
If I hadn’t cared for the story, I wouldn’t have been able to listen at all.
I have hundreds of audible books, and I’m sorry to say, I will be careful in the future not to purchase any others narrated by William Matthews.

Flat narration and slow, dragging plot
This story wasn’t bad but it dragged on and on...likely made worse by the flat narration. Had it been given a more upbeat reading (say, Stevie style) it may have been easier to take in, seem less slow, and better able to engage and hold my attention.

Nice story
I enjoyed this story very much. The narrator was new to me and I thought he sometimes sounded a bit stiff. But good all over.
