Some science, mostly opinion

Parts of this book were great - especially the coverage of empirical studies in love, marriage and genders. I really liked the idea of holding true to your must haves and the relationship risks of not doing so.

However, at times this book seems to promote what feels like highly manipulative tactics - mainly aimed at how women should, or shouldn’t, behave towards men in order to obtain a marriage proposal. I think the author strays from the science and makes recommendations based upon her own (n=1) opinions, experiences, frustrations and mistakes.

I really had hope for more balanced coverage that ultimately aided both sexes in securing a successful, long-term relationship. In the end, I was very disappointed with this book and am likely to only use ~20% of the advice.

A must read for any single!!!!

Would you listen to Love Factually again? Why?

Yes, most definitely! There is so much information I want to make sure I can remember it all. Not too much, just so much that is so relative to today's dating environment. I just finished it, I am going to start it again today.

What other book might you compare Love Factually to and why?

I am to date, unaware of any other book to compare it to. Duana Welch has put so much work and research into this book, there couldn't possibly be anything to compare. College and graduate research written with enough common sense that any one of any education level can read, listen to, and completely understand. Her communication skills are far superior to almost anyone I have heard: whose book I have read or listened to, or anyone conducting a workshop, seminar, or college professor giving a lecture. Superior communication skills

Any additional comments?

When I first started reading Duana Welch's book I was somewhat skeptical, having already heard a little of "dating strategies" and basically feeling as though one has to be a manipulative person to succeed in dating and finding a suitable mate. I no longer think that. All the research she has done is pertinent to today's male/female psychology and basic instincts when it comes to dating and mating. A must read for anyone still single, or newly single from 16-75. No kidding. I was married for 34 years, divorced, and am back out there again. It's all very relative and would have been relative when my ex-husband and I first met in 1981.

The author reads the book herself, and has a very pleasant voice making it easy to listen to. She speaks very clearly and evenly, but doesn't not to the point where it is boring. As with any good audiobook reader, you don't even think about the reader, just the information or story being read.

I can't say enough good about this book. Well worth anyone's time!!!

Absolutely everyone must read this

This is one of the top 3 books I've ever read for helping to figure out and fox your life (not just your love life). I am skeptical of some of the reasoning regarding the evolutionary psychology, but I cant argue with how well my own behaviors in the past have fit with it, whether i like it or not.

The book is inspiring, insightful, direct, practical and should be required reading in grade school. I wish I had read this book when i was 13.

pay attention guys: the sharks are coming

This book is a godsend.
Prof. Welch reveals what women are *really* after when they enter the dating circuit.
Forget about soppy love songs by commercial artists and swinish advice by agony aunts.
Nuggets of wisdom from miss Welch:

studies of modern families show that depending on the country, about 2-20% of kids are being raised by someone who wrongly believes he’s the daddy

men, the first thing you need to do is be as generous as you can be. Do not hold back. [...]It’s because you’re wanting to impress this woman.

Non-wealthy men who catch a much better-looking woman tend to get cheated on, dumped--or cheated on *and* dumped. Women who aren’t very young and attractive, but nevertheless insist on a high-resources mate, usually don’t even get dumped or cheated on; they just get ignored.

(about getting married:)The only way to do it is by leaving your man and seeing whether or not he comes *crawling* back to get you.

But [my husband to be] adored adoring me. [...]Will you want to sit at his sickbed? Will you feel honored to take care of her when For Better becomes For Worse? If you love—yes. It’s evolution’s mate insurance

Be Hard-to-Get: Use jealousy[...][women] cultivate jealousy to discern the strength of their lover’s feelings and enhance his commitment

I needed this!

I have been dating the same way for years with mixed results and a lot of heartache. This book was the reboot I need to adjust my thinking and approach to dating. I have already connected with higher caliber men. I look forward to seeing what happens next.

Good stuff, even for an old married man

Really insightful, I think my teenage self would have been able to make more practical use out of Love Factually but it has many gems of wisdom for an old married man too. I listen to a lot of audio books and I tend to dislike the ones narrated by the authors but Duana has a way of speaking that is both friendly and familiar.

Science Based Courtship

From where to look for a new mate through to marriage, Dr. Welch offers advice on finding a life partner for marriage-minded adults. Her tone is empathetic and her material is thorough - even providing a few word-for-word scripts for difficult conversations like:
Bringing up (or having) sex too soon
Turning down a date
Breaking up
Saying "no" to cohabitation
I haven't found my life partner (yet), but I feel like I have a plan and if I just employ this ten-step process, it might just work.
