Summary

A victim? Or a killer?

One icy cold morning, the remains of a woman are discovered. She has been abused, then butchered. DI Kelly Porter knows this is the work of a monster. One who has killed before - and will do so again.

Kevin Flint is a young man with no friends and a reputation for being odd. He explores the hidden corners of the Lake District and likes to creep and watch. He witnesses depravity, and it excites him. But will he cross the line from bystander to perpetrator?

Despite her personal life taking unexpected turns, Kelly’s detective instincts tell her that the answers lie with Kevin - if only she knew the right questions to ask. Will Kelly miss her chance and have blood on her hands? And will she ever be the same when it’s over?

A stunning new DI Kelly Porter crime novel that is perfect for fans of Patricia Gibney, L. J. Ross, and Angela Marsons.

Would make any Scot cringe

The story as usual was very good. I have listened to and liked them all. This one unfortunately was ruined by the most awful attempt at a Scottish accent I’ve ever had the displeasure to hear. For future reference Scottish people really do speak normally. They pronounce all the letters in every word! Honestly we do! Clare Kissane do some real research and listen to some lovely Scottish speakers. That was an embarrassment to every Scottish listener.

Disappointing, gratuitously gruesome.

I have read all previous books in this series. This one was an immediate ‘ lost cause’ from the beginning and taking up to Chapter 17 to get really started. Then it was downhill all the way with an unhealthy and disturbing character, unbelievable references to disability and homophobia. The main sad criticism was the portrayal of women as mean, callous, deleterious and deserving of caged violence, setting the super advancement of women to date back two centuries. I couldn’t finish the book and will not be reading any more of this author.

Story ok but distracted by the worst accents

The story is ok, it contradicts earlier books on the ages of the main characters which is frustrating. The main problem is the shocking Scottish accent.

Scottish Accent

I have loved all of the books so far and the narrator too 5 stars all the way . However this book took hours before the book became interesting, and the Scottish accent of the detective was appalling and detracted from what ended up a good story.

Terrible narration

I normally enjoy Rachel Lynch books but this narrator has ruined this one. The mixed up accents between Scottish and Northern Irish drives me crazy and I’ve had to stop listening to it. Very very disappointing. I can’t really give this one any stars as I haven’t listened to it. :-(

Poor

I tend to listen to these books while driving, as they’re not particularly taxing but keep me interested. The biggest issue has always been the narrator - she’s so unutterably clunky - and this is by far the worst. I actually wondered at one point whether it was an AI voiceover. Terrible inflection, robotic, and appalling accents. Also completely inconsistent - the criminal psychologist has suddenly started talking like the queen. When did that happen?

In terms of the writing, I found this book particularly poor. Year 10 creative writing with a thesaurus on hand. Why use the word “tome” when book will do? It sounds forced and amateurish. And just a ridiculous amount of exposition. I’ve read a lot of crime thrillers and never have I come across an author so inept at conveying technicalities to the reader. There are better ways than basically writing out paragraphs from a textbook.
I’m going to finish the book, but it will be an effort.

awful accent , good book.

I love Rachel's books but this is the first one I've tried on audible .
was OK until a Scottish character was introduced. absolutely awful Scottish accent. sometimes veering into Irish and Indian. I had to give up at chapter 25 and buy the hard copy. but the actual story was good.

Good Story

Not one of my favourites but did enjoy as always with Kelly Porter.
I found the characters a bit off with this one and not sure about some of the suggestions.
