In this paradise you won't like what you see . . .

When Nina's father dies, she inherits a gleaming dream vacation home in a balmy tropical paradise - one she had no idea existed. The house is extraordinary: state-of-the-art, all glass and marble. How did her sensible father ever have enough money for this? And why not tell her about it? Desperate to uncover why he hid such a big secret, she decides to visit.

Maria, once an ambitious medical student, is now a nanny for the super-rich. The money's better, and so are the destinations - like this new assignment in the British Virgin Islands. But when her wards never show, Maria begins to make herself at home, spending her days luxuriating by the pool. There's just one rule: Don't go in the basement. But her curiosity might just get the better of her. And soon, she'll wish her only worry was not getting paid.

As both women's timelines intertwine, dark secrets start to unravel and one thing quickly becomes clear - nothing could have prepared them for what they are about to encounter.

Critic reviews

An absolute rollercoaster of a read. It will leave you breathless
This book has it all: superb writing, exotic locations, mysterious academics, sinister puzzles, and brilliant characters. The perfect, unputdownable book club read. Irresistible!
Smart and spine-tingling . . . I inhaled it
Sinister, stylish and shocking. Look in the Mirror is the kind of twisting, twisted mystery I just adore
A gloriously, lushly evoked setting and an utter white-knuckle ride of a plot that took me into a heart of darkness. Catherine Steadman more than delivers on the brilliant twists and thrills I've come to expect from her writing, yet still rings the changes - this feels totally fresh and unique
[A] splendidly creepy tale . . . Written with flair, and a touch of Hitchcock, it squeezes the imagination to breaking point - wonderful
A real page-turner
An inheritance puzzle turns sinister in this beguiling, atmospheric mystery. A seductive, expertly plotted page-turner that will give you the shivers
Engaging, twisty and highly original
Unpredictable and deeply unsettling, a must-read
I read Look in the Mirror in one breathless sitting. Utterly compelling, twisted, and original. I loved it!
Addictive, thrilling, intoxicating
Be prepared for a goosebumps-inducing twist in the tale
Hypnotic and pulse-pounding, Look in the Mirror is both a dazzling puzzle-box of a thriller and an evocative exploration of trust, power, and how well we really know the people we love. I flew through its lush prose and intricate plot in 24 hours flat-and didn't want it to end!
Exciting, fast-paced and terrifying. This really is a locked-room thriller that has readers holding their breath at the same time as the characters!
Look in the Mirror is an astonishing adrenaline rush of a novel, one that keeps you guessing from start to finish. Catherine Steadman has created an endlessly surprising puzzle box of a thriller in which one's most personal memories are used as tests- you fail and you die. The best novel I've read in ages
Deliciously sinister
A great summer read

As mum to a toddler that loves to read but hasn’t got the time, I can’t be grateful enough to the narrator, the story is brilliant and the narrator is just as brilliant . Just awesome.

I loved this story. Such a fantastic idea and very dark.
I just wish the book had been longer. It seemed to end quite suddenly and I feel there could have been a lot more content and more exploration of the characters.

Excellent

Such an uneven writer. Some of her books are slick & incredibly well plotted with shades of Highsmith. Others, like this, flounder very quickly. Undoubtedly a great writer when she has the story, but this just doesn’t cut it.

Great start, middling middle, poor end

I really enjoyed this one. It felt a little darker than some of Catherine’s previous novels, but equally great for a holiday read. Wonderful narration as usual.

Started as a solid mystery and morphed into a thriller!
