From the Booker Prize longlisted author of The Wall, comes his first novel in eight years.

What if the year's most talked about TV show was all about your marriage?

Kate, thirty years into her marriage, has a seemingly idyllic metropolitan, North London life.
Phoebe, a young screenwriter, is the creator of the year's hit TV show, Cheating.

When Kate's world takes a darker turn, she thinks she sees details and intimacies in the show that only she and her husband Jack could possibly have known. But who has betrayed who? Who gets to tell whose story?

A black comedy of resentment and entitlement, Look What You Made Me Do is the story of two very different women from two very different generations, heading toward a battle only one of them can win.©2026 John Lanchester (P)2026 W. F. Howes Ltd

Totally engrossing thriller, cleverly written, well portrayed, believable. I liked the narration and will be looking forward to more.

Gripping, twisted, clever....

This book is hugely entertaining and very, very clever; and for me the cleverest thing it does is to hide its meaning, as it were, in the undergrowth.

A rather fun plot intertwines the lives of various characters at various times of their lives, told through the eyes of two rather dislikeable characters.

We become aware that a generational war is taking place between boomers and Gen Z-ers ; in one way, we're told, it's as trivial as thinking about whether you serve coq au vin or Ottolenghi when you have people round fkr dinner; but on the other hand, it's a murderous fight for life and happiness.

No spoilers, but I'm left in no doubt which army Lanchester thinks are the most vicious fighters; and so the book, while seeming to feign nonchalance, leaves you gasping at the depth of the consequences and the scale of destruction wrought by this war.

Two great performances in the reading, as the icing on the cake.

Warmly recommended.

An extraordinary book with vast hidden depths

I could see it working as a TV drama to be scheduled - ironically enough - on Netflix. It kept my attention alive which is not a mean feat for any book these days. On the other hand, it disappointed me big way! It promises, but it never delivers. I couldn’t in all honesty care about any of its characters - I was expecting a sort of redemption that never came!

Beautifully performed

I loved this. Binge listened so it was over far too soon. Particularly adored the first chapter in which Phoebe describes her mother, The author cleverly shifts our evaluation of the different protagonists until we (I, anyway) disliked most of them equally. Poor Tony though.

Very cleverly constructed

I did not enjoy this book. It is well written and it does keep you reading. However the characters, especially the women, are awful and utterly dislikable people. I really did not care what happened to any of them: I was not emotionally engaged at all and in fact I was relieved when I came to the end so I could leave their squalid, amoral, sordid little world. It seems to be a celebration of vengefulness when really, in the world as it is, I could do with a bit of uplift.

Demoralising
