Let down by the narrator

If I had read some previous reviews before purchasing, I would have been prepared for the dreadful narration of this story. The constant rise towards the end of sentences became so distracting that I almost gave up after the first chapter. However, I persevered and must have become more tollerant although I do think a grittier narrator is required for this story. The plot was ok with several twists and turns but I found parts very repetative and weak. Overall, an ok thriller read by an irritating narrator.

Reasonable story but irritating narration

Overall I enjoyed this story. However, I had figured it out right from the opening so none of the twists had any effect for me. It's a shame really because I felt the author came on too strong in one area and so the twists never changed my mind. Having said that, I did enjoy the story and it wasn't ruined by knowing the secret.

Unfortunately, I found the narration monotonous and irritating. She's good with accents and voices in short dialogue, but for any lengthy dialogue or prose her voice repeats the same intonation for each sentence. I almost didn't continue listening at the beginning because it was so irritating and distracting. A real shame.

Just average & a little plodding

I wish that the main character did a little less thinking & that there was more actually going on. The narrator's voice really grated.

Spoiled by the narration

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The reader

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Duerden’s performances?

no

Was Look Behind You worth the listening time?

The story was enough to make me cringe through the narration but only just....

Any additional comments?

From the start the rising tone of every sentence drove me crazy ! It was a relief when other characters were introduced just to get a different tone. I almost gave up but the story was interesting enough to make me persist to the end.

Awful narration, don't waste your money or time!

Sibel Hodge MAY be a good writer, it's hard to tell when the narrator did such a bad job.

She gave a level of melodrama the whole way through (and I mean evey page, every word!) that you expect the villain to be twisting his moustache!

There was no tension because there was no rise and fall... even when the character was reading documents or receipts where you would expect it to be read quite blandly, Ms Duerden read them as though they were terrifying, but so over the top that you couldn't take it seriously.

This is definitely the worst reading of any book I've listened to, it just became irritating.

ok,

I really struggled with this one, but stuck with it, its most certainly the worst book I have listened to in quite some time.

I think it is a mixture of the content and the narrator, i didn't find either great, whilst the narrator has a nice voice she made Chloe the character sound very pathetic - in my opinion. I would say her voice and manner are better suited to fun romances.

Gripped me from the beginning

Really enjoyed this book from the beginning. Gripping story, a classic 'who done it?'. Narrator was good although some voices sounded the same but it definitely didn't spoil the story. I would recommend it.

unable to listen

I couldn't get through 5 chapters of this book. The narrator is the worst I've encountered so far on audible. I am extremely disappointed.

Dull and Predictable

Imagine someone speaking to you for hours on end with the EXACT SAME INTONATION for each sentence . The story line was nearly A's intolerable. Damsel in distress, hunky guy, slimy husband, whole lot of "I just can't " dialogue. Skip it.

Pick this one.

If you love to read mysteries/ psychological thrillers but you often have a problem enjoying them wholly as your fun is taken away before the second chapter has ended because you already know 'who's done it' - you might like this book. I had "figured it out" plenty of times throughout listening to this book, but only to find myself doubting my thinking over and over again. I enjoyed the narration. Listening to this story in an accent that is different from my own added to the intrigue, I think. I really enjoyed this book!

Decent

I got the book free trough my Amazon prime reading. So that's why I'm not too disappointed with this book. It didn't cost me anything. I wouldn't be too thrilled if I put a credit on it, but perhaps that's a fault of my own. I'm not entirely sure this genre is for me. I'd say it's a bit predictable, in a sense. You'll probably guess what happened within the first few chapters. There are some missing pieces and red herrings, etc. you get closure at the end, which is nice. Overall, it kept me busy and helped pass the hour of lunch at work. The narrator does well.

So to summarize.
Being free was good.
The narrator did well.
The story was predictable.
But there's still enough story to tell to keep you occupied.

The most Predictible and cliched book I've read.

What would have made Look Behind You better?

An original thought

What do you think your next listen will be?

Stephen king or Jodi Piccoult possibly.

How could the performance have been better?

A better book.

What character would you cut from Look Behind You?

This book was so bad that I actually wanted the whiny main character to die. Then at least I could have said it had an enexpected ending.

Any additional comments?

I almost never write negative reviews because I admire anyone who can write, but this book was so bad that it was a complete waste of my money and time.

Terrible narration

This woman thinks she's reading a 9 hour poem. I'm halfway thru and I can't take it no more. I'm gonna pull my ears off. I've read 600 books. without a doubt the worst narration I've ever heard. She's terrible.

Page Turner!

A little predictable yet still suspenseful, a little cliché yet still interesting, a little too drawn out yet still compelling.
