In September 2014, Azad Cudi became one of seventeen snipers deployed when ISIS, trying to shatter the Kurds in a decisive battle, besieged the northern city of Kobani. In LONG SHOT, he tells the inside story of how a group of activists and idealists withstood a ferocious assault and, street by street, house by house, took back their land in a victory that was to prove the turning point in the war against ISIS. By turns devastating, inspiring and lyrical, this is a unique account of modern war and of the incalculable price of victory as a few thousand men and women achieved the impossible and kept their dream of freedom alive.

A book to marvel at, learn from, and return to again and again (John le Carré)
Profoundly affecting . . . There are horrors but also humanity - inspiration, even, alongside the tragedy. A surprisingly lyrical tribute to a much-put-upon people and to fallen comrades in arms that deserves a wide audience (Fergal Hallahan)

Most who will read this account, will be lured by the word ‘sniper’. As I also did. However the book is much for than this, bringing clarity about the Kurds, their situation and showing inside the minds of this very appealing people. Littered with brutal accounts of operations and fighting the Jihadists, the book pulls the audience higher towards a better picture of what it’s like to be a soldier, what it is like to kill. The damage this causes. It also unveils the remarkable people of Kurdistan and the tragedy and sacrifice they have endured, not just fighting isis. The narrator is also fantastic, portraying emotion and local language. If you want a full account, warts and all of what happened.. look no further.

This reads like a thriller, you constantly have to remind yourself it is real life. I was tempted to listen to it because
of the John Le Carre comment , and I was not disappointed.

Fantastic

Very well written and a great account of a war that, for all intents and purposes, is still raging. I am glad people like Azad are willing to share their stories to keep for generations to come. The YPG and YPJ amongst other fought against the odds and against a vicious radicalised enemy and prevailed. This is a great testament to them.

Fantastic insight

What an extraordinary piece of work. I couldn’t stop listening. The values espoused, the insights into the fight, the flow of the story were all just extraordinary. Up there with the best books I have ever read.

Stunning
