Summary

May 1937, and London prepares to crown a new king. At the height of the Coronation celebrations, Detective Chief Inspector Archie Penrose is called to the BBC to investigate the murder of a famous broadcaster, a death which Josephine Tey suspects is linked to a decade-old scandal. With Archie's hands tied by politics, it is left to Josephine to get to the truth. Soon she is forced to confront at first-hand the deadly consequences of love, deceit and betrayal.

Imaginative story

This is the fourth book I've read/listened to in the series and it follows the same formula as the others: some crime detection mixed with a lot of delving into the relationships among the main characters. The present novel is set at the time of the coronation of George VI and involves the demise of the BBC broadcaster doing the important commentary on the event. It's an imaginative story and kept me listening to the surprising denouement near the end. As with the other books the last hour or so has over-wrought and over-long explanatory monologues.
The narrator is excellent employing her skills to produce a range of accents that helps one to keep track of the many characters.

So much better than the last

Back on track with a story that gives an insight to the early days of the Beeb as well as a nice twisty plot. Excellent performance

Absolutely fantastic!!

Wow!! By far the best book in the series so far!! I did skip the last book as Archie and the crimes are the best bits and I didn’t fancy a whole book that could be filled with the Josephine/Marta saga!!

But this book was an absolute joy! The narration was as ALWAYS amazing and the book was Nicola Upson at her best!!! writing crime fiction and never straying from the plot!

Bravo!!

Series continues strongly

It’s hard to talk about the development of characters in this series without giving spoilers but this book centres on the death of a BBC presenter and even some of Josephine’s friends are noticing what a selfish pain in the arse she is. I have so many questions for the author of this series!

Enjoyed Narration

The story started well and l was immersed found the narration fabulous however in the middle it became so long winded and unrealistic A great reminder of how hard it must have been for woman working alongside such prejudice
