More than covering great events that change the contours of history, Professor Garland takes you into the scene and allows you to hear what he terms the "heartbeat of history". Rather than merely reviewing the facts of events such as the Battle of Marathon, the arrest and trial of Jesus, and the coronation of Charlemagne, you'll engage with a variety of firsthand accounts and authentic primary and secondary sources to experience what it was like to live these events as they occurred. From reports by historians such as Herodotus and Livy to official scrolls and administrative records, these eyewitness sources and ancient documents take you back in time through the eyes of people who were there.

Lovely course!
This is an interesting course, filled with great stories, told by an engaging professor. Although some bits may seem anecdotal, they are all based on solid academic research. All in all this was fun and educational; what more could you ask for?

Great story telling!
I challenge you to find a person more passionate about their subject than Prof Robert Garland.
It's not just his knowledge of the subject that is staggering but how he lives and breathes the lives of the people he is talking about.
You can hear the passion for his subject in every word. It's simply inspiring.
This is the second of Prof Roberts lectures I've listened to and I'm eager to listen to more.

Excellent as ever!
Prof Garland once again leads us as a knowing guide to the moments where history turns. He makes a personable and insightful one. Totally recommend. I want to say more but don’t want to give away any of the drama that awaits you on this journey!

A superficial, PC-tainted version of history.
The earlier episodes were interesting, if unexceptional.
However; when Garland approaches more recent historical events he retreats into abject apologetic.
Not recommended.
