Summary

Generations of readers young and old, male and female, have fallen in love with the March sisters of Louisa May Alcott's most popular and enduring novel, Little Women. Here are talented tomboy and author-to-be Jo, tragically frail Beth, beautiful Meg, and romantic, spoiled Amy, united in their devotion to each other and their struggles to survive in New England during the Civil War. It is no secret that Alcott based Little Women on her own early life.

While her father, the freethinking reformer and abolitionist Bronson Alcott, hobnobbed with such eminent male authors as Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne, Louisa supported herself and her sisters with "woman's work," including sewing, doing laundry, and acting as a domestic servant. But she soon discovered she could make more money writing. Little Women brought her lasting fame and fortune, and far from being the "girl's book" her publisher requested, it explores such timeless themes as love and death, war and peace, the conflict between personal ambition and family responsibilities, and the clash of cultures between Europe and America.

Great story, ok narration

A classic for a reason - a beautiful story.

Only problem I’ve found with this recording is the audio volume jumps and drops rather dramatically in places which can be a pain if you’re listening on headphones. It’s also had a few editing slips where words or sentences have been repeated for different emphasis but not cut out again, which is quite annoying once you start noticing it! But a nice tone and pacing of voice otherwise.

Problem with sound quality

The volume is very inconsistent, varying from where it is set to too quiet to hear. The narration and of course the story are wonderful.

Sounds quality is terrible

I want to finish this book but the quality of this recording is terrible. it sounds like the reader recorded her voice on a laptop or home computer. The volume changes drastically within a few sentences. It's awful. I want a refund.

The Sound is done poorly, but all else is good!

There are bursts where the sound is much louder than others. It will get so quiet I have to turn the sound up but then get loud again suddenly and startle me. The story and performance is very good, though.

Remove the book from inventory

The book's a sound disaster. No wonder it was less than a dollar! I gave up after 2 chapters. The volume goes up and down. Clarity is awful too.

Faded in and out

The performance was fine; however, at times the volume faded a bit making for challenging listening.

So sweet!

Such a good hearted story! You’ll laugh and cry and learn many lessons yourself when reading this book. It’s a long read, but well worth it in my opinion!

Narrator Not a Good Match for this Book

I have several copies of this book read by different readers. This is my least-favorite. The pace is too brisk. The reader's accent often tiptoes into an unwelcome Brit upper class nasality -- possibly excellent in other books, but not appropriate here, The reader may be unfamiliar with American idiom, at least, the idiom of yesteryear. Many phrases have a jarringly incorrect emphasis. The reader is at her best when Alcott is being witty. That comes across well.

Poor production

The reader is great, but unfortunately she got a very bad producer. The sound volume goes up and down so I’m constantly adjusting it to be able to hear or to keep from getting blasted. Also, words and phrases are repeated like two sound clips were not edited correctly together. It draws away from the story and reading and made me want to stop and purchase a different edition. There’s a reason it’s only $0.71.

Excellent, easy, enjoyable listen.

The reader does an excellent job. I highly recommend this version. The volume does change in a few spots, but listening with headphones, this wasn’t a distracting issue for me. There are also a very few (3 that I counted) moments where a line is repeated, as if re-recorded and overlooked upon editing.
