About this listen

Generations of readers young and old, male and female, have fallen in love with the March sisters of Louisa May Alcott's most popular and enduring novel, Little Women. Here are talented tomboy and author-to-be Jo, tragically frail Beth, beautiful Meg, and romantic, spoiled Amy, united in their devotion to each other and their struggles to survive in New England during the Civil War. It is no secret that Alcott based Little Women on her own early life.

While her father, the freethinking reformer and abolitionist Bronson Alcott, hobnobbed with such eminent male authors as Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne, Louisa supported herself and her sisters with "woman's work," including sewing, doing laundry, and acting as a domestic servant. But she soon discovered she could make more money writing. Little Women brought her lasting fame and fortune, and far from being the "girl's book" her publisher requested, it explores such timeless themes as love and death, war and peace, the conflict between personal ambition and family responsibilities, and the clash of cultures between Europe and America.

The reason I am Jo not Joanna is entirely down to this book. Mum named me after her favourite character. The priest who baptised me insisted I had a proper Sunday name but only my Grandma C ever called me by my full name. Like Jo March I am Jo and always will be! It is strange that I have grown up very much like Jo and whole I don't have my own garret I do have this box room where I spend about 80% of my free time surrounded by notebooks and piles of books to be read. I am yet to find my own 'Prof' though.

A nostalgic childhood favourite

What did you like or dislike? Hmmm… I LOVED ALL OF IT! But I find it quite annoying that the first few chapters of Good Wives are in the first book? Otherwise PERFECT

Brilliant I love this

A classic for a reason - a beautiful story.

Only problem I’ve found with this recording is the audio volume jumps and drops rather dramatically in places which can be a pain if you’re listening on headphones. It’s also had a few editing slips where words or sentences have been repeated for different emphasis but not cut out again, which is quite annoying once you start noticing it! But a nice tone and pacing of voice otherwise.

Great story, ok narration

As previously stated in a past review, there is only one instance of a repeated line. The rest of the reading is wonderful and such a good price!

Beautifully read beautiful story.

Just a note to readers, this audiobook is a combination of both ‘Little Women’ and the second part ‘Good Wives’.

Contrary to a few reviews on here, I found the narration was lovely to listen to.

I would definitely recommend this audiobook, I really enjoyed it.

Really enjoyed the narration
