William Dorrit has been a resident of the Marshalsea debtors prison for so many years that he has gained the nickname "The Father of the Marshalsea". However, his suffering is eased by his close bond with youngest daughter Amy, or "Little Dorrit".

The dashing Arthur Clennam, returning to London after many years in China, enters their lives, and the Dorrits' fortunes begin to rise and fall.

A biting satirical work on the shortcomings of 19th century government and society.

It may not be one of Charles Dickens?s best known books but I would thoroughly recommend it, especially if you like thumping great Victorian novels! However it wouldn?t be half as good without the narration by Anton Lesser. Every character is given their own voice, making them instantly recognizable and the plot that much easier to follow. And some of them are very funny and so cleverly done. Altogether this book is a joy.

Dickens is a master of characterisation, and of course social comment, but this is not his best story: there is the odd hole in the plot, its twists and turns are a little over the top, and it is mawkish - over-sentimental.
But it is still superbly written.
And......Anton Lesser's reading is just phenomenal. He should be given an Oscar (or audiobook equivalent). My Respect, and Thanks, to him.
His delivery when Flora is talking is Five Gold Star stuff.
I will look for his readings again.

Anton Lesser is simply SUPERB

Thank you Charles Dickens for such a beautiful story. There are some beautiful messages in all of Charles Dicken's books, and it is always the kind and loving people with the biggest hearts that find fortune, but not in the shape of money. This book has such a beautiful love story, but is also an excellent, so well thought out and written novel that keeps you interested until the end. Charles Dickens had a marvelous way, of enriching all his books with so many wonderful character that all play their part in weaving together such a clever and amazing story. He was a genius of writing and story telling. I loved the characters of Amy (Little Dorrit) Arthur Clennam, Mr Panks! (wonderful character!) and John Chivery! he was such a selfless character, as was Amy and Arthur. Cried at the end, but also a happy ending! Highly recommend, this is my second book read by Anton Lesser, he's a fabulous narrator, reads with so much emotion and character and interest. Highly recommend The Old Curiosity Shop too, also narrated by Anton. 😊

A Beautiful Story With Some Wonderful Characters.
