Summary

Meet Cathy Connolly - cop, kickboxing champion and now a soon-to-be mother....

Detective Garda Cathy Connolly's life has taken an unexpected turn. Faced with an unplanned pregnancy, Cathy's trying to decide how she's going to balance motherhood with the very real dangers of life on the job, especially when her latest case isn't as straightforward as it first appears.

Called to what seems like a routine break-in, Cathy discovers the bones of a baby concealed in the hem of an old wedding dress. When the dress' original owner, Lavinia Grant, is found dead in a Dublin suburb, Cathy is drawn deep into a complex web of secrets and lies spun by three generations of women.

Meanwhile, a fugitive killer has already left two dead in execution style killings across the Atlantic - and now he's in Dublin with old scores to settle. Can the team track him down before he kills again? Struggling with her own secrets, Cathy doesn't know how dangerous - and personal - this case is about to become....

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Detective Cathy Connolly, of the Garda, loves her job. Attending the scene of a burglary, the case takes on a new, disturbing, angle when Cathy discovers little bones sewn into the hem of an old wedding dress. The dress was given to the burglary victim, Zoe, by her grandmother, the wealthy owner of a well-known Dublin fashion house, Lavina Grant. Lavina is then found dead by her best friend, the wonderfully acerbic Trish. The whole story is stitched together seamlessly using threads of many colours; murder, missing people, infanticide and dark family secrets. Cathy, along with her old mentor and boss O'Rourke attempt to unpick the tiny stitches, trying to get to the material truth. With all that going on, Cathy also attempts to patch together a solution for a pressing personal problem. The story was enjoyable and intriguing, the characters well rounded and believable. Cathy is a strong female lead, a Thai Boxing champion, I couldn't wait for her to put that to use. Aoife McMahon's narration is excellent. Five stars, looking forward to hearing more in the series.

A good audio book that draws you into the story.

The story of little bones found in a bridal gown keeps your interest even though it does become a little fanciful as the story expands. Characters are drawn sympathetically and the lead detective is gradually developed as the story expands.

Sam Blake hits a blinder!

Fantastic audiobook! The characters were real and the book captured me from the beginning. The best praise I can give a book is is how quickly I finish it. This outstanding book was finished in two sittings. I only stopped to sleep! I read mainly detective thrillers, and this one of the best! Coming to Ireland from the States 35 years ago, I thought these brave people were amazing to actually do the majority of their job without a gun! They have an amazing ability to calm situations with just talking. This book has given me a little more insight to how things are handled in the big city.

Couldn’t stop listening -

BUT, I was not ready for it to end. Thought Emily and Tony would adopt Cat’s baby. At least it was not predictable. Great read. Looking forward to #2.
