Pacy and propulsive, Conn Iggulden's latest historical epic heads back to the battlefields and warships of the Ancient World . . . Crackling with energy, violence and stirring speeches, Lion chronicles power struggles, political machinations and the bloodthirsty ravages of up-close combat
Iggulden draws the Greek world convincingly and he is strongest writing battle scenes
The master historical storyteller returns with the first of a new pair of novels about Athenian general and politician Pericles. This swords-and-sandals epic brings the sights, sounds and smells of the ancient world to life, telling the story of the ongoing clash of empires between Greece and Persia. Conn Iggulden's research is second-to-none and his writing has never been more addictive. At home, Pericles is navigating a difficult marriage while shoring up his position in Athenian politics and art. But, in this gripping read, he also faces the ever-present threat of a resurgent Persia on the battlefield.

it's true this is a slightly "longer" book to his previous Greek books but it is all setting the scene and providing important background to new characters and the complex relationships across Greece.

Rich with history and setting the scene for 2+3

it's a great book/series, but the voices the reader does are extremely off-putting. it's a shame, because his reading style is good, but the character voices are comedic...

Great book... Odd voices...

I'm so glad I listened to Gates of Athens and Protector before this book ... At the end of them I really, really wanted to know about Pericles... Conn is very good at taking the few facts on offer and filling in the blanks.. I held off on these books of Conns because I was such a fan of Christian Camerons' ancient historical fiction OMG! He is just as good.... Also I really like this narrator, he's not just reading a book, he's living it for the listener. Total voice actor.... I like him a lot.

Fabulous

3.5* but Audible still doesn’t allow 0.5 star ratings for some reason and, although worth your time, not a 4* production that the author is capable of.

Athens’ creates the Hellenic League, as tensions mount with Sparta, the Athenian Navy takes on Xerxes Persian army for the third and last time.

I’m a fan of this author, his historical novels are often very good to superior. This one is good, the author does a reasonable job with his characterisations but somehow fails to reach its potential for bringing in a dynamic, vibrant, living history. It fails to live up to the Iggulden’s best work.

Good, but not the author’s best.

Cannot recommend Conn Iggulden enough to anyone interested in ancient history. The reader was okay but some of the voices didn’t match the imagined characters

Another brilliant story
