Summary

Lightning in His Hand is a complete biography of Tesla's life, from his birth in Croatia in 1856 to his death in New York in 1943, with a special focus on Tesla’s experiments in Colorado.

After an auspicious early life in Europe, Tesla came to America and worked for a time with Thomas Edison, but their paths diverged after Edison failed to pay Tesla the $50,000 he owed him. Stunned at this infidelity, Tesla joined with Edison's rival, George Westinghouse, in the "battle of the currents", pitting Edison and his advocacy of direct current against the alternating current he proposed with Westinghouse. The winner (Tesla) determined which type of electricity powered the majority of America.

Well before Tesla came to Colorado Springs, this battle was waged on one important front in Colorado. Westinghouse, using Tesla's patents, built an alternating current plant to provide power to Telluride's Gold King Mine in 1891. It was an early victory for alternating current, and by association, Tesla's genius.

Tesla's fame grew over the next decade, and by the end of the century, he desired a lab of his own in which to conduct more advanced electrical experiments. The results of much of his research were spirited away after his death by elements of the US government and are rumored to have been used - in secret - to develop high-tech antigravity vehicles and other modern marvels.

An amazing genius

Nikola Tesla. A name we've all heard of, yet few of us understand the scope of his work and genius. This is an amazing biography of a truly unique scientist. It is packed full of facts and insights into the private life of the msn. Read this biography and wonder where the world would be now if he had full financial backing for his experiments. If there is one biography you need to read this is it. I received a free copy of this audio book at my own request and voluntarily leave this honest review. .

A fascinating look at a very clever pioneer

I was given a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for my honest review. This biography of Nikola Tesla was not one I would normally choose, as I prefer fiction stories. However I was gripped by the wide variety of inventions and pioneering research done by the subject and how he affected the modern world. A really good narration which described the life, works, and influence of Nikola Tesla on the world both in the world of his youth and adulthood and also his visions for the future, I was so impressed with this book I am now planning a visit to the museum in Belgrade.

Interesting historical/personal account

An interesting look into the life of a person who I did not know was as important as he was in terms of his contribution to electrical engineering. The narrator brought it to life and kept me listening

Exhaustive and exhausting

I received this book free for review. The narration is very pedestrian, and there seem to be some odd words used - vindicted instead of vindicated, for example - although I am not sure whether the authors are responsible for this or whether the narrator misread the words. I'm still only at his childhood, and cannot listen to any more.

Enlightening

A flawless narration by Aubrey Parsons reveals the meticulously researched account of Nicola Tesla's birth, life and death. It reveals his highs and lows, successes and failures in invention, business and life in general. It held my attention throughout.

An Excellent Well Balanced Biography of Tesla.

Having read several biographies of Nikola Tesla this is perhaps the most concise and best. It is free from sensational claims or elevating the man to mythical status. In a very well written and superbly narrated book it clearly states the facts of Tesla's life, his inventions and ideas plus the impact they had. There is a very good account of his eccentric personality and how he interacted with his peers and friends. To me it brings out his human side as well as his genius. A very rewarding listen.

The reading is quite boring but Nikola is great

Towards the end it gets very fiddling to listen to the reader as he has a very old monotone... But the book is great an see what Nikola did is unbelievable.. This guy's was living in 2080 back in the days...

Nicely balanced

Nicely balanced personal and scientific life events and well explained their interconnection. It took me a while to get used to a narrator’s voice, and was disappointing that he mispronounced some words towards the end, but all in all it was ok. The book will be interesting not only to those who do not know much about Tesla, but also for those well informed as it puts all of the events in the context of the time that they happened in.

Learning made interesting.

This is not a topic that I would have normally listen too, But, in this case I did. The narrator voice was perfect for this type of book, and I actually learn something. This was a very interesting history lesson. Thanks.

Educational and excellent narration

When it comes to biographies, I find them so fascinating but in audiobook form, it has to be brought to life for me with the narration or I'm lost to it and find it too easy to give up. Aubrey really tells the story and brings it to life. The story is intriguing, compelling, and definitely worth a listen. Note: I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

A great delivery of a great story!

A great delivery of a great story! I really enjoyed the narrator and the story was educational. The story of Tesla is still very under-reported so this audiobook does a double service: it's fun and entertaining plus being educational. I would recommend this audiobook to others. I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author (at my request) in exchange for an honest review.
