Summary

#BookTok phenomenon and award-winning author Alex Aster delivers listeners a masterfully written, utterly gripping YA fantasy novel

Welcome to the Centennial.

Every 100 years, the island of Lightlark appears to host the Centennial, a deadly game that only the rulers of six realms are invited to play. The invitation is a summons—a call to embrace victory and ruin, baubles and blood. The Centennial offers the six rulers one final chance to break the curses that have plagued their realms for centuries. Each ruler has something to hide. Each realm's curse is uniquely wicked. To destroy the curses, one ruler must die.

Isla Crown is the young ruler of Wildling—a realm of temptresses cursed to kill anyone they fall in love with. They are feared and despised, and are counting on Isla to end their suffering by succeeding at the Centennial.

To survive, Isla must lie, cheat, and betray…even as love complicates everything.

Filled with secrets, deception, romance, and twists worthy of the darkest thrillers, Lightlark is a must-listen for fans of legendary fantasy writers Marie Lu, Marissa Meyer, and Leigh Bardugo.

a solid four star read

Initially when I purchased this book, it was due to the pre order reviews that slated this as an absolutely abysmal read.
do not let those reviews sway you from giving this a read, as you stand to miss out on what is consider to be a thoroughly enjoyable YA book.

at times there are moments when the cliché does show itself, some names of characters and locations did make me chuckle admittedly. but considering this is indeed a fantasy novel, those seemed to drift away into an enjoyable story.

if you go into this with an open mind and not expecting what some marketing had claimed it to be (the hunger games with fantasy). then I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

the narrator does a good job of making this story come to life, and I can honestly say that I enjoyed the performance.

don't go into this experience expecting to be wowed by a masterpiece of writing, but at the same time don't go expecting a poor piece of writing.

all in all this was possible one of the most entertaining pieces of YA literature iv read in along time. the characters were enjoyable and well written, the story well explained and I for one can't wait to see the movie adaptation and to hopefully read more in this series.

Amazing is an understatement

Wow, it’s probably the best book I read in years. So good! It felt like a simple fantasy book in the beginning but somewhere after the middle events started spinning so fast and unpredictable that I guessed only one thing out of everything. The writing is beautiful too. And the narrator did a great job. I’d give it 10 stars if I could.

Suspense-Fuelled, Unique Fantasy YA Read

I loved this book, the performance was excellent by the narrator also, I liked the certain inflections and emphasis she put on certain words, it really added to the protagonists personality. The dialogue was really great and you could follow who was who very easily. I found myself completely immersed in the story rather quickly, as most fantasy books, the dreaded world building took a fair few chapters but Aster did this effortlessly and in all honesty, it was done better in my opinion than some other fantasy books that are more readily known/common. I felt like nothing was ‘filler’, Aster built her world and her characterisation rather quickly and effectively; I wasn’t left wondering or thinking that xyz chapter could’ve been shorter or was a bit much like I have with similar fantasy novels (I’m looking at you Crescent City). If you like magic and intrigue, with a splash of romance and betrayal you in one regard sort of see coming (hence the dropped star) but on the other you definitely DON’T see coming - then get lost in Aster’s world of Lightlark and fall in love with her dynamic characters and story as I have. Can’t wait for book 2!

The book that broke my reading slump

Firstly I will say, this book isn’t expertly written. The writer has a way to come with her writing skills.

However, the story she has created, is incredible. It is gripping, twisting, incredibly planned out, and has the potential to be the next great movie series. I can honestly say I did not see some of the major twists coming, and the end had me jaw dropped.

I believe Alex Aster has created a masterpiece, that is unfortunately being undermined because she needs to fine tune her writing. As long as you can see past that this is an author who is still growing and learning, you will not regret this read.

the plot twists left me on the edge of my seat screaming 😱

I liked the character development throughout the whole story line but I read a paperback while listening so I think that helped
