I left my family and tiny Texas hometown 15 years ago to escape small-town gossips and to give my mom and sister the chance at a better life. But when a phone call from an attorney back home informs me that my sister passed away, leaving me custody of her newborn baby, I'm shocked out of the steady life I've built for myself running a tattoo shop in San Francisco. The thing is: I don't do babies. And I don't do small towns. Or commitment. And I especially don't do family.

Is it really wrong to want to murder your boss? Dylan has worked for Gabe for two years. Two long years of sarcastic comments. Two long years of insults, and having to redo the coffee pot four times in the mornings to meet his exacting standards. Not surprisingly he has devoted a lot of time to increasingly inventive ways to murder Gabe. From stabbing him with a cake fork, to garrotting him with his expensive tie, Dylan has thought of everything. However, a chance encounter opens his eyes to the attraction that has always lain between them, concealed by the layers of antipathy.

Messy-haired, soulful-eyed, off-kilter lyricist Les Graves holds tight to the hedonist’s credo of consumption in every avenue of life. He has trouble staying still, trouble staying sober, trouble turning down a good time - but put a pen in his hand, and he’ll set a page on fire. Music was Evan Porter’s ticket out of the backwater mud puddle he was born in. Every ounce of sweat has been devoted to making Porter & Graves a success. He’s the level-head, the quiet maestro, the seatbelt keeping Les from flying too far out of control. And he’s getting tired of playing savior.

Summary
After a year of picking up the pieces of his shattered life, former US marshal Micah Beasley takes a job as bodyguard for a spoiled rich kid who can't leave his house. It's supposed to be a cupcake assignment. He just needs to get back in the game. What could possibly go wrong?
Brilliant and incredibly talented, Christopher (Kit) Auberon wears tragedy as a second skin. Kit is all that's left of a powerful family. Seemingly forgotten, he's spent his entire life in seclusion at the family estate, and he likes it that way. He's free to play his games and create worlds without ever having to set foot in the real one.
Kit's past is anything but forgotten. When death threats become real threats, Micah and Kit are forced to put their differences aside to discover who wants Kit dead.
But there are monsters in Kit's closet that should never be disturbed.
Warning: Dark subject. Violence. The usual stuff.

I enjoyed this book and from the beginning I was so intrigued! I couldn't wait to learn more about a guy who can't speak and lives in a prison of his own making. Everything about the story line was very original. But then things went a little crazy. The middle/end of the book was just too much all at once for me. Then the very end was a good, sweet HEA.
Narration was really good.

Loved the autistic mc and liked the story
I really liked Kit and his view of the world from his tower. I didnt dislike the other MC but just didnt love him either. And i think the narrator may detract from the story.I cant really put my finger on it because he isnt bad at all - i just dont feel him somehow. Some parts he is very good at like the computer voice part, but other parts kind of need more feeling. The suspense part of the story is good and not at all black and white because Kit is a difficult troubled person with a lot of psychological issues both due to his autism and the trauma and he does not react like other people. It is a long story and i kept thinking it was over (suspence resolved and so on) but discovered that there were about an hour left. It is not a bad listen all in all and if u enjoy suspence M/m Hea u will like it. Maybe reading it would be better but it can be listened to, too.

Interesting story, great job by narrator
Where does Light from the Dark rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I would put it in the top third. A very interesting story about a young man who is traumatized as a child when his parents are killed in front of him and he is kidnapped. As an adult, he is agoraphobic and won't leave his suite of rooms. When he feels threatened in his own house by a break-in he hires a bodyguard who has problems of his own with PTSD. Their first meeting doesn't go well but they manage to come to an understanding. I had a bit of a complaint that their relationship seemed to overshadow the mystery in the first half of the book but it finally started coming together in the second half and by the end all questions were answered satisfactorily.
What does Derrick McClain bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
At first I wasn't too sure about the narrator but as the story went on and I could hear the difference in the voices that he did for the characters I ended up really enjoying the narration.
Any additional comments?
I have really enjoyed the books I've read by Mercy Celeste. I hope that she goes on to have her Southern Scrimmage series done in audio also.

Good Mystery / Broken Characters = Great Story
Would you consider the audio edition of Light from the Dark to be better than the print version?
Love a good mystery with broken characters coming together to help heal each other. The story of Christopher and his battle with his unique autism issues. Mercy Celeste is always a delight. She has such a great imagination and control of her characters when traveling through the obstacles her creative mind sets for them to tackle. This audio version was just as enjoyable as the printed. I was excited to see one of my favorite authors releasing on audio. I hope she releases more
What was one of the most memorable moments of Light from the Dark?
When Christopher had his big "episode" and had to be put in an isolated room. How Micha was able to pull Christopher out of his "darkness". Beautiful
Have you listened to any of Derrick McClain’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, only one. TJ Klune's "How To Be a Normal Person". I LOVED both performances but it took me a little while to drop Gus (one of my favorite all time characters) out of my mind. Derrick's voice is very distinct but he does a wonderful job.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and I believe I did.
Any additional comments?
As I said I love Mercy Celeste and hope she releases more of her work on Audible.

My Review:
Overall: 4.25
Performance: 4.5
Story: 4.0
One of the things that I love in m/m stories is that a lot of times they feature unexpected heroes. Kit is that unexpected hero in this book. It takes a while for the story to reveal exactly what is wrong with him, because when the book starts, the only thing the reader knows is that he's mute...and secluded...and brilliant...but definitely not normal.
Micah also has no idea what he's getting into with this bodyguard assignment, but he's blown away by the pure beauty that is Kit. It also helps a lot that he knows sign language which makes him one of the few who can communicate with Kit.
The entire story was completely riveting. There's the mystery of Kit, the suspense of what the heck is going on, and the unknown of what is really going on. Because there is a TON going on in this story....and so, so, so many twists and turns. It's hard to keep your head on straight when it all starts to unwind. Wow, the end of this one was flat-out crazy...and I loved that.
Note on narration: I loved the narration on this one. I listened to it during a crazy time so I was in and out of the story a lot. But even with that, the narrator had such an incredible variation to his voices that I never was guessing who was talking in the story or digging right back into the story.
It was just a great listen. It got crazy at times, but I really liked all of it.

Great read
I really liked this book, I've listened to the audiobook 3 times. You have to suspend what you know and expect about certain conditions and just go with the flow. It's not high anxiety though I can see it may trigger some sensitivities. The only problem is at the end where the reasons are revealed, I'm still not sure I understand but that doesn't impact the major story which is 2 broken people finding love and acceptance together.
