This book is one of a series featuring the exploits of investigative journalist Annika Bengtzon. I had listened to The Long Shadow before the present book only to discover that Lifetime is the former’s back story. This meant that I knew the outcome of Lifetime which reduced the tension of the final chapters. It seems one needs to listen/read this series in chronological order.

Lifetime is a good story however too many of the characters are rude, irritable and/or sarcastic to one another: their unpleasantness emphasised by the narrator’s harsh style of reading. In her investigative work Annika frequently and heedlessly, dives into dangerous situations while at the same time her personal life crumbles around her resulting in her being in a perpetual state of emotional and psychological overdrive making the narrative feel incessantly overwrought.

I found the narrator’s abrasive voice and staccato style of reading detracted from my enjoyment.

Good story with very few likeable characters
