A WATERSTONES BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘Magical... A book that will refresh your soul.’ Carol Drinkwater, author of The Olive Farm

___

THE TRUE STORY OF A COURAGEOUS LEAP INTO A NEW LIFE

In 2000, burnt out by city living, Julian Hoffman and his wife Julia took a bold step: they left everything behind and moved to Prespa in northern Greece – a remote landscape of vast lakes, snow-capped mountains and stone villages.

Here, their seasons are punctuated by unforgettable encounters, including nesting summer pelicans, a springtime stare-down with a bear and a winter meeting with fourteen tiny birds above a frozen doorway.

Lifelines is a story of new beginnings – of searching for home in an unfamiliar place, finding community across borders and truly discovering your place in the world.

‘I was enthralled and won't be the only reader making travel plans.’ Gaia Vince

For anyone with a love of wild places, of the natural world and particularly of birds, this book is a story of finding community and close connection with nature in a remote Greek mountain village. Alongside a lyrical account of day to day mountain life there are informed observations of how climate change and human behaviour threaten the survival of this precious habitat and the steps they and their community are taking to protect the place they love.

The blurb describing this book was misleading. It’s not about two people searching for a home in Greece, but rather two people who read a book about a specific place and go to live there. It is mainly about nature, wild birds, the climate crisis, biodiversity, more birds, sand mining, the destruction of wildlife, pelicans, wrens, cranes, brown bears… and birds. There is a great deal of exposition, an attempt to squeeze into the writing as much information as possible. This results in absurdly long sentences with multiple subordinate clauses and prepositional phrases. Hence, we get a book that is very difficult to read out loud. Added to this is the constant repetition throughout of certain phrases: I’ll remember… I could see… It brought us… We do this… It’s the… The author is enthusiastic about his subject matter, so we must respect what he tried to teach us here.
