Summary

Learn the secret of living with contentment, peace, and security.

Pause for a moment and ask yourself what your life would be like if it were completely without fear? If you did not fear death. If you did not fear life and what it might bring. If you did not fear any man, or woman, or any living creature. Would you live differently?

In this unique work of never-before-published teaching, Dallas Willard revolutionizes our understanding of Psalm 23 by taking this comfortably familiar passage and revealing its extraordinary promises: "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.... I will fear no evil." The psalmist claims to live without any need and without any fear. How is that possible?

Written with Willard's characteristic gentle wisdom, Life Without Lack reveals the secret to enjoying God's presence and becoming utterly caught up in his abundant generosity. The more we practice living in his presence, the more we experience the peace and freedom from worry that is promised in the psalm. Based on a series of talks by the late author and edited by his friend Larry Burtoft and by his daughter, Rebecca Willard Heatley, Life Without Lack will forever change the way you understand and apply the most well-known passage in all of Scripture.

Dallas in Great Form

This book is not a standard, linear verse-by-verse tour of Psalm 23 as much as it is a deep dive into what it means to know God as well as the Psalm’s author did and how having that relationship will change one’s life for the better. Just the teaching about how living daily in the understanding that we lack nothing that we truly need leads to gratefulness, peace and contentment, is worth the price of the book. But there is so much more!

It took a bit to get used to the narrator because I am so accustomed to Dallas’ voice. The narrator is more hurried and forceful in places than I envisioned Dallas being. Other than that, the narration was done very well.

Living the 23rd Psalm

Life Without Lack: Living in the Fullness of Psalm 23, by Dallas Willard, is a wonderful, devotional that is worth regular revisits. I highly recommend it. Its goal is that you “may know increasingly, by joyful experience, a life abundant in rest, provision, and blessing—a life without lack.” The author provides practical insight in applying the principals and truths of Psalm 23.

A few quotes to whet your appetite…
“God is an ineffable reality so much greater than anything we ordinarily see around us or come to deal with in human life; he simply has no comparison. We are blessed to live in a world where there is a fully self-sufficient, generous God who wants to provide what is best for us and loves us more than we could ever imagine.”

“…The most important thing about you is your mind, and the most important thing about your mind is what it is fixed upon. So the object is to have your mind always fixed on the Lord.”

“As you practice living your days in the sufficiency of the Good Shepherd, you will make tremendous progress in experiencing the Psalm 23 life that Christ came to provide. You will see remarkable growth, and all the good things Jesus desires to give us—a rich life of joy and power, abundant in supernatural results, with a constant, clear vision of your never-ending life in God’s world and an abiding sense of your work day by day—will become the common, yet extraordinary, realities in your life.”

How to get all you want--allow wants to change

Do you really love Jesus so much that your wants become exactly the same as what he gives you? This is a book that either will change your life (in which case you will love it) or it won't (in which case you won't.)

Your response to the book depends on your attitude. The content is drawn from a small group study session guided by Dallas Willard. He's a biblical philosopher. Those who have known him (I've talked to some of them) will tell you that he comes very close to living by his own philosophy.

Do you really want to live your life by the promises in the 23rd psalm? Surprisingly, it's practical and possible. But it's not easy. Simple, but not easy. Can you learn to forgive? To love? To invite Christ into everything you do, every day? Do you dare to want to?

Maybe you're just curious. It will be a hard book to read, but it will be a thought-provoking book. Are you really trying to live a Christian life, and discouraged that you can't really do it? Then this book is a must-read. It will give you a path that puts a Christ-filled life in the realm of possibility.

Every Christian should at least try to become familiar with this book. It will give you a picture of what a relationship with Jesus is like. Do you dare?

Gentle, Powerful, Insightful

What comes to mind as I read Works by Dallas is “Come, let us reason together.” I was deeply encouraged in his discussion of Psalm 23. Especially his insights about the definition of faith and the different seasons of faith that Job experienced.

It Was Alright

I thought the book would get more into specifically showing you how to believe God for financial provision, but it was more of a global sufficiency. The author definitely seemed to live in what he preached.
