Summary

"Your teen is a child who is old enough to understand, but is still young enough to be pliable."

In Life Strategies for Teens, author Bukky Ekine-Ogunlana draws on 14 years of experience working with teenagers and their parents to offer proven methods for improving family communication skills, learning positive parenting and positive discipline methods and strategies for dealing with teen cell phone use and social media safety.

In this book, you will learn valuable teen communication tips:

  • How to understand teens - what teenage girls and boys really mean when they talk and interpreting non-verbal communication.
  • How to recognize teen depression and proven methods for dealing with it.
  • Parenting skills for dealing with disappointment and shortcomings.
  • Positive reinforcement practices for praising successes and encouraging growth.
  • How to monitor teenage cell phone, video game, and social media usage without causing a family meltdown.
  • How to curb nonchalance and defiant behavior with positive dialog and setting a good example.
  • How to raise a responsible, moral and purpose-driven teenager that you can be proud of.

Your children’s teenage years are when you should let them explore their growing teen independence, yet gently reel them in once in a while to make behavior adjustments as needed. Think of it as parental "product testing". That means a lot of trial-and-error blanketed in love, before you proudly and confidently release your masterpiece into the world market!

Good Resource

This book is one of the good resources out there, though there are many others that I have read. This is a book that actually gave me some straightforward and simple common-sense advice that was easy to understand and put into practice.

Out Of This World

This book has taught me how to respond in a more positive way that keeps the peace instead of starting a power battle. I'm much calmer in my approach. When the children are doing something not the way expected, I'll remind them of the consequences, and they have been listening to the calm approach. We must treat them with respect. I love it!!

I Highly Recommend It

Has a few good tips, stories and mixes so not boring to listen to. Very practical and sensible approach to dealing with and communicating with teens, so they do what is expected of them and the changes the parents need to make.

Great Strategies

I like the ‘’Putting it into action strategies’’ though simple but the reminder was necessary, and it has given an insight that has helped in dealing with the present. It has helped me reflect and understand what is important to tailor my discipline.

Worth Listening

It is worth listening to this book. It has some little and simple nuggets to apply to one’s action. These are what we all face which works as exactly as explained!! It starts with us as parents, so if you are ready to be honest with yourself & REALLY want changes, there are some few answers here for you, where the cases apply. So simple to apply.

Not my cup of tea

I downloaded this book after reading the reviews but I should have guessed by its length that it would not be to the depth that I was looking for.

I've recently listened to "The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read".'by Philippa Perry. Unfortunately, this book doesn't come close and is far too shallow for my liking.

I also didn't like the use of words such as Obedience and similar when referring to getting your teenager to do things.

Great Guide

This audiobook is well read. It teaches how to help our children learn to be responsible, share friendship without yelling or losing your cool.
Great books on how to be in control as a parent.

Recommended!

I have read MANY parenting books over the years and this is THE book. I would qualify it however with this is a tough mindset switch so be prepared. Parents, it is so worth it! I wish I'd had this book when my kids were little. The simple method of putting it into action is a good reminder.

Bossy and irrelevant

This is a whole load of waffle and common sense like being present and got to school plays. Very instructive and the author recommends the bible as a coping strategy. This book should not be published in 2019!

Excellent for building solid foundation

I grew up in a household where parenting had a totally different approach from what I just read from this audiobook. This audiobook approaches parenting in positive and in a more friendly way, where rules and boundaries are set without giving too much stress to both parent and child, where talking and listening become the main components of discipline. Recommended audiobook.

Quite straight forward!

The strategies are easy to follow and do some of them in my case but a reminder to keep at it, and I think other parents will find them helpful and relatable. I think the recommendations are practical, and I believe teenagers will find them acceptable. The dialogues between parent and child are realistic, and one can picture the situations with teens and getting them to do basic things.

Very Much Helpful

Great book, got many valuable insights and tools. Not all parts resonate with me but I fully recommend reading it. Parenting is so personal, there are so many variables as to what feels like the right thing to do in certain circumstances;

An excellent book that really helped me

It is very hard when that cute child who used to give you hugs suddenly shuns you and it happens very quickly, but they test you too, to see how much they can get away with and that you still love them. You have to let them go and make their own mistakes while watching and praying .

Really enjoyed

I could identify with almost every chapter and it does tell you some simple putting it into action on HOW to deal with the problems, it brings things into perspective and helps you realise that 1) you're not alone and 2) the problem is not unique to you and your family. It had some really helpful points about the way we should deal with different situations Putting the advice into practice really did help to make a difference and avoid unnecessary conflict.

If you are a parent you need to listen to the book

What a wonderful audiobook. I wish this was handed out to all parents at my hospital to see the need to communicate better with teens. I love the illustrations The author sure gives some wonderful perspectives. This book contains so many role play scenarios or actual scenarios of parent / child conflict and how they worked through it .

Realistic Inspiration for Parenting Teens

I loved listening to this audiobook! It has such a valuable contribution to communicating with teens. Author, has made a summary of the major tenants of parenting psychology. The audiobook portrays an upbeat and joyful approach to parenting. It describes many scenarios (and battles) that will (and should) occur during the transition to a wholesome teenager. Wish I found it earlier. Makes sense of a difficult time!
