Summary

"Your teen is a child who is old enough to understand, but is still young enough to be pliable."

In Life Strategies for Teens, author Bukky Ekine-Ogunlana draws on 14 years of experience working with teenagers and their parents to offer proven methods for improving family communication skills, learning positive parenting and positive discipline methods and strategies for dealing with teen cellphone use and social media safety.

In this book, you will learn valuable teen communication tips:

  • How to understand teens - what teenage girls and boys really mean when they talk and interpreting non-verbal communication.
  • How to recognize teen depression and proven methods for dealing with it.
  • Parenting skills for dealing with disappointment and shortcomings.
  • Positive reinforcement practices for praising successes and encouraging growth.
  • How to monitor teenage cellphone, video game, and social media usage, without causing a family meltdown.
  • How to curb nonchalance and defiant behavior with positive dialog and setting a good example.
  • How to raise a responsible, moral, and purpose-driven teenager that you can be proud of.

Your children’s teenage years are when you should let them explore their grоwing teen independence, yet gently reel them in once in a while to make behavior adjustments as needed.  Think of it as parental 'product testing'. That means a lot of trial-and-error blanketed in love, before you proudly and confidently release your masterpiece into the world market!

Great Strategies

Life Strategies for Teenagers actually presents strategies for the parents of teenagers rather than the teens themselves. Tips are helpful and practical.

I Recommend This Book

In Life Strategies for Teenagers, the author provides practical advice to parents facing their children’s dreaded teen years. Subjects such as disobedience, defiance and laziness are combatted with counselling, patience and consistency. I found the putting it into action relatable which you don’t get from most books.

Awesome Tips

Throughout the book, this author states the obvious time and time again. “Therefore, every day, strive to improve your relationship with your teenager.” “Learn the art of asking great questions.” Both are worthy goals, and there few specific information on how to accomplish these feats.

Very Helpful Audiobook

Depression in teens, unlike in adults, often manifests as irritability or anger. This fact explains a myriad of problems such as substance abuse, eating disorders and self-injury. Ekine-Ogunlana writes knowledgeably about recognizing and dealing with this condition.

Awesome Author

The most informative chapter is about depression. It’s a huge factor in why teens act the way they do.

Highly Recommended By Me!

As with most self-help books, specific stories illustrate various principals, but they contain such realistic dialogue that it’s possible to take the advice seriously. When a mother invites her daughter to go out to dinner, she says, “I will require you to come with me somewhere.” A son is talking to his father about their different taste in music and says, “Just because it is not your cup of tea, doesn’t mean it’s all bad.” Just as these conversations are likely to happen, neither are the magical outcomes where the child is instantaneously transformed into a model citizen but over time.

A Good Book

I’m all for positive parenting, and there are some good ideas here, Each chapter begins with an overview of the problem to be addressed, Sometimes the discussion is followed with a “Putting it into Action” section, sometimes not. Overall good book.

Five Stars

This book introduced so many of the key elements that are so crucial for teens to understand about growing up, understanding how important the right perspective is, making good choices, and how to get what they want in a healthy manner. It's not a cure all, but if your teen won't hear you, this book can help!
