About this listen

Are you a teenager who feels like you just can’t win? Everyone says you aren’t a kid anymore, but no one considers you an adult either….

Before you turned 13, did you want nothing more than to be a “grown-up” teenager, but then it turned out to be this strange halfway point where no one listens to you because they think you’re too old to be a kid, but too young to be an adult? Then, to add to the confusion, you have a million new things to learn—like budgeting, laundry, and how to maintain a car—but not one of these things is being taught in school. Well, if it’s any consolation…you aren’t alone. In fact, according to a survey conducted by OnePoll on recent college grads, “81 percent of respondents agreed they wish they were taught more life skills before graduating college.”

Learning how to be independent is hard, and you’ll certainly encounter problems along the way. But the key is to remember that you can solve these problems—and you can be one step ahead of the game by knowing what to expect and being prepared for the curveballs life throws at you—with the help of this easy-to-understand book!

Inside, here’s just a fraction of what you’ll discover:

  • How to become a super teen who doesn’t give in to peer pressure
  • Clever ways to avoid those dreaded awkward silences
  • A situation when it’s good to blame your parents and they’ll be happy you did it!
  • The secret to landing your first job like a pro when you actually have zero experience
  • How “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees can save your life (or someone else’s) one-day
  • Tips on how to be smarter with your money from creating your own budget to dipping your toes into the world of investing
  • A step-by-step guide on what to do when the cops pull you over
  • Everything you need to know to survive when you’re home alone and how to keep the house in one piece
  • And so much more

I've listened to a few books on helping teens grow into young adults and this is one of my favourites. It comes with so many useful practical steps that you will never get taught in school and by many parents. The chapters on getting your first job and managing the house on your own were particularly useful and the author has a really clear way of laying all this information out. I really like the narration too as she keeps you engaged throughout. Any parent who wants their teenager to have a head start in adulthood should buy this book!

I really enjoyed this book. I found it very practical in that it begins by helping the teen figure themselves out which is the basis of any kind of growth in skills. Then, they learn things like how to get their first job and how to begin making money moves. The chapter on online safety can help anyone even adults. This book is incredibly practical.

A great asset to support teens through their most difficult years. This book promotes increased self-confidence, social abilities, and correct manners. It also gives essential guidance on the web safety, budgeting, basic life abilities, and living independently. A big takeaway from the book is the significance of not evaluating oneself to others. Adolescents often invest a lot of energy scrolling through social media and questioning why they are not as gifted and so on as the individuals they observe online. In general, this book is instrumental in aiding teenagers to cross the divide between adolescence and adulthood.

As a parent who wants to ensure my children are well-prepared for the responsibilities and realities of grown-up life, I thought this book was great. The author empathizes with the confusion and frustration many teenagers experience when caught in the limbo between childhood and adulthood. The book addresses the lack of practical life skills education in schools and provides a guide to fill that gap. I like that it offers practical advice and knowledge that teenagers need but often don't receive elsewhere.
