This audiobook is refreshingly frank about adulting, cutting past the noise with no-holds-barred, real-life advice. The author's writing is sharp, witty, and engaging, rendering even dull topics like healthcare and budgeting into something almost exciting. The narration is as assured and conversational as the book, holding listeners without being condescending. While parts of it are a bit glib about knotty topics, they provide an adequate starting point for young adults who wish to survive in the real world. I think it is ideal for those who feel ill-equipped for the realities of adulthood and acts as a worthwhile crash course in life skills that schools often neglect.

Too bad this isn’t a mandatory class to educate our youth on what they need to know in the adult world. Every single one of the topics in the book is necessary to be prepared for things like renting your first apartment, creating a budget, and learning how to plan your bill payments.

I don’t believe I have seen health care choices as a topic for this age group, but this book covers the guidelines well. In the current digital world, recommend introducing this book in the audio version first, and then having the printed version available as a reference guide to access a specific topic.

Recommend that every person leaving high school or even college listens to and reads this book.

Why don’t they pass this book out in High School?

I grabbed this because I kept running into stuff I felt I should already know, like budgeting, laundry hacks, and basic foodstuff. It made me feel less behind and more like, “Okay, I can figure this out.” It’s got a good mix of useful and funny, which kept it from feeling boring or lecturey. I’ve already used a few tips and felt more capable of doing things independently. I wish I had this a few years ago.

Why didn’t anyone teach this in high school?

As parents, grandparents, and caregivers, we do our best to prepare young people for the real world, but some things elude us even with the best of intentions. This guide complements those efforts, offering simple, easy-to-understand advice in key areas of adult life. Topics such as health insurance, basic finances, digital security, and everyday social etiquette are clearly explained and highly relevant. It is neither patronizing nor overwhelming; it offers just the right amount of guidance to build confidence without sounding like a lecture. Young adults can utilize this resource when making real-world decisions. I think it will be helpful to them well into their twenties as a reminder and reference, a valuable and timely addition to any young person's toolkit.
