La première partie du roman, La Fille de la comédienne, s'était terminée par le départ du marquis Arthur de Rudemont et de Clémence Beaujonnier, l'institutrice devenue sa maîtresse. L'Héritage d'Arthur commence donc au moment où le château n'est plus habité que par l'oncle et la tante d'Arthur, ainsi que des domestiques.
Pour parvenir à ses fins (à savoir hériter la fortune du marquis), Clémence a commencé par faire enfermer dans un couvent, Denise, fille naturelle d'Arthur et héritière présumée. Puis elle emmène Arthur pendant quelques années en Angleterre et en Italie, avant de le ramener au château, alors qu'il est très diminué suite à un infarctus.
