About this listen

"Claire McGowan at her very best."―Peter James

From the bestselling author of What You Did comes the story of a young couple who are about to discover that in a house full of secrets there’s nowhere to hide…

For Helen and George, the remote fixer-upper in Cornwall was supposed to be a dream home, and a way to leave behind the problems they’re both running from. But something about the place feels wrong from day one. And why does Helen have a creeping feeling she’s seen this house before?

Her unease only deepens after renovations begin, when the builders find sinister dolls hidden in the walls. As Helen digs into the house’s past, she discovers that the previous owner was not only rumoured to be a witch; she was also imprisoned for a brutal triple murder thirty years earlier.

When a horrific accident almost ends in tragedy, Helen worries that the house’s secrets are to blame, and as events spiral out of control she discovers George has been lying to her. As the past returns to haunt them, the couple realise they are in terrible danger, and they can’t trust anyone—not even each other. Because Helen hasn’t been entirely honest with him either…

Wow! So many twists and turns. Beautiful writing and so in depth, felt like you knew them personally. This is only the 2nd if this authors books I listened to, believe me, I'll be listening 🎧 to a all her books now. All narrator were spot on. A must read!

This book kept me interested all the way through. Lots of twists and turns, good characters and a great plot.

Great story

I started this not sure whether I’d like it. I started it in the car on my way to and from work. Fairly soon I was listening when I got home and just generally finding a reason to listen. I’d sort of guessed some of the ending before I got there, but that didn’t take anything away from the story! Credit to the narrators too. I’d just like to say (being a builder) that some of us aren’t that bad 😉 a very enjoyable, atmospheric, novel. All the better for the different voices.

Absorbing

Lots of twists and turns, very good ending. Clever plot worth reading. Would make a great film.

Great storyline

I really enjoyed the story and the way it was presented in parts. I wanted to keep listening to find out how it would all play out. Will definitely try another book by the same author. Some exciting twists and turns.
What I did not enjoy was some of the accents. Helen was brought up in Devon but did not sound it when read by the characters main narrator.
The most ridiculous one though was that Jana, who was Cornish was mainly narrated by someone with an American accent! If I hadn't enjoyed the story so much, I would have stopped listening due to this.

Great storyline, accents not so good
