Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The world has finally awoken to the reality of climate breakdown and ecological collapse. Now we must face up to its primary cause. Capitalism demands perpetual expansion, which is devastating the living world. There is only one solution that will lead to meaningful and immediate change: DEGROWTH.

If we want to have a shot at halting the crisis, we need to restore the balance. We need to change how we see nature and our place in it, shifting from a philosophy of domination and extraction to one that's rooted in reciprocity and regeneration. We need to evolve beyond the dogmas of capitalism to a new system that is fit for the twenty-first century. But what does such a society look like? What about jobs? What about health? What about progress?

This book tackles these questions and traces a clear pathway to a post-capitalist economy. An economy that's more just, more caring, and more fun. An economy that enables human flourishing while reversing ecological breakdown. An economy that will not only lift us out of our current crisis, but restore our sense of connection to a world that's brimming with life. By taking less, we can become more.

Critic reviews

A powerfully disruptive book for disrupted times. Jason Hickel takes all we've been been told about growth and development and turns it inside out, offering instead a radically possible vision of a post-growth future. If you're looking for transformative ideas, this book is for you. (Kate Raworth, economist and author of Doughnut Economics)
A masterpiece pulling together the ecological disaster wake-up call from The Uninhabitable Earth, the economic enlightenment from Piketty's Capital, and the colonial history from Jason's own The Divide. Just ace. (David Heinemeier Hansson)
A masterpiece... Less is More covers centuries and continents, spans academic disciplines, and connects contemporary and ancient events in a way which cannot be put down until it's finished. So much needs to change; although beginning that change might require nothing more than asking the right question. (Danny Dorling, Professor of Geography, University of Oxford)

best dismantling of capitalism - animism ftw!!

Excellent observations and an essential rebuttal to the literally cancerous economic system we have been embedded in for TOO LONG. Jason weaves together with exquisite clarity the history of how we ended up in such a mess and how the future holds many solutions if we can make the shift to human and democratic centred societies!!

Outstanding

One of the most compelling, brilliantly told and important books of our time. As we face into the very real risk of ecological collapse, we have everything to lose. But adopting a different approach, call it degrowth, or call it a reciprocal approach to living with Mother Earth, we have everything to gain. It’s clear we are at a critical juncture, and we don’t have much time. On a finite planet we can’t keep growing exponentially under the same capital accumulation model for ever. But a better future is possible. We could chose abundance instead of plunder. We could chose regeneration instead of exploitation. We could choose fairness instead of inequality. A great book which will fill you with hope as well as anger. A must-listen.

Raises good questions

At times very philosophical and not always easy to keep going. But I did learn chocking facts I was not aware. The book raises pertinent questions which I always brushed aside as obvious and never truly questioned.

Life changing!

A real eye opener. This book ties together so much in such an absorbable way. It explains how we arrived where we are and what we can do about it.

Superb. Essential reading for 2020

This book gave me a fresh perspective on Capitalism itself. It'll make you angry, but importantly it will leave you with a sense of hope for what can and indeed must come next.

Thought provoking and insightful..

I found this a great read when it comes to explaining the causes of the climate and environmental crisis while providing real solutions, not the green washing that often passes as such. Gives cause for hope.

Most important book of my life time

This book might be one of the most important books I have ever read to date. It sits in the space where anthropology ends and economics begins, and it offers truly insightful visions of where we have been where we are, and where we need to get to as a species moving forward. Incredible

We are only part of the nature, nothing more.

Humanity can only survive if post-capitalism profits will be used for mother earth recovery.
This book is a masterpiece.

Amazing explanation of degrowth

Less Is More does an excellent job at summarising the link between capitalism and ecological boundaries, whilst ensuring the reader understands why this has come to form.
