Deux planètes se font face.

Anarres est une utopie concrète fondée sur la liberté absolue et la coopération. Mais loin d'être un paradis, c'est un monde pauvre et dur. Sur Urras, le capitalisme et le culte du profit règnent en maîtres. L'État centralisateur est tout-puissant, l'individualité niée. Le Dr Shevek, éminent physicien d'Anarres, se rend en mission sur Urras au grand dam des siens. Pourra-t-il faire partager aux habitants d'Urras la promesse dont il est porteur, celle de la liberté ?
