Summary

The instant number one international best seller.

Manual by Jocko Willink is the essential and practical guide to leadership and how to excel at it, from the coauthor of the number one New York Times best seller Extreme Ownership.

In the military, a field manual provides instructions in simple, clear, step-by-step language to help soldiers complete their mission. In the civilian sector, books offer information on everything from fixing a leaky tap to developing an effective workout programme to cooking a good steak.

But what if you are promoted into a new position leading your former peers? What if you don’t get selected for the leadership position you wanted? How do you overcome impostor syndrome when you aren’t sure you should be leading? As a leader, how do you judiciously dole out punishment? What about reward? How do you build trust with both your superiors and your subordinates? How do you deliver truthful criticism up and down the chain of command in a tactful and positive way?

These are all questions about leadership - the most complex of all human endeavours. Leadership Strategy and Tactics: Field Manual is here to help you navigate your way through the difficulties of leadership by providing a direct, situational, pragmatic how-to guide that anyone can instantly put to use.

This book is a rapid reference manual that explains how to take leadership theory, quickly translate that theory into applicable strategy, and then put leadership into action at a tactical level. This book is the solution that leaders at every level need - not just to understand the leadership game but also to learn how to play the leadership game - and win it.

Lessons on leadership and life.

The best leadership strategy out there. The simplistic and honest way Jocko delivers his message is something anyone can understand and get behind. He reviews things from all perspectives and offers realistic tactical advice on how to effectively lead. The lessons in this book go beyond those required for leadership; It's a handbook for life.

Some excellent content but I struggled with the narration.

There some great tips in the book, maybe a lot of it nothing new but it does make you think a little more about how a leaders actions have so much impact on the rest of the team.

However, I found the narration really put me off. I know it’s written by an US Navy Seal but the person reading it sounds like he’s straight out of an action movie, cheesy.

Honestly outstanding book on leadership

I've been in senior leadership roles for 20+ years and I found I had a great deal to learn from this book. Simple, honest, clear and rooted in experience, I started using some of these techniques while reading and was amazed to get almost instant feedback from my direct reports about how positive and effective they were. Whether established or starting out, leadership is a craft and this book will help you be better at it.

Very military focused

There are some great tips in this audio. Worth a listen. However, the military focus really started to grind on me. Everything’s a mission!

Great for network marketing professionals as well

It was definitely one of my favorite books ever! Very very practical, total applicable tips. I was a manager in the corporate world as well as a network marketing professional. It makes total sense in both position. I could remember several episodes when I misbehave and also acted the right way. I enjoyed the book so much that I wish it was longer than it is.

Nothing you don't know

I was excited starting this, thinking it would have some clever insights but it's really nothing you don't already know. Maybe if you are very very young and have really never seen any exams of leadership you might find some interesting points.
It's also hard to listen to a whole book narrated in this style.
Unfortunately could not finish it.

Immersive content and delivery of leadership strategy and tactics. The book neatly connects ideas previously explored in preceeding books by Jocko Willink. It enriches previous principles and adds extra layers into tactical toolbox of any leadership. Enjoyable and educational read.

nr1 book on leadership

if i were to give someone just 1 book to give them the knowledge and prerequisites to become a good leader this is it. The performance in this audiobook is of course flawless. Because, the author and reader makes a living teaching leadership and speaking on a podcast. If you have this book then all you need to do is read it, understand it, and practice it. Im positive.

One of the best leadership related books I read in a long time

I cannot associate with the military anecdotes as I have never been to combat and nobody tells me “roger that” or “I’m on it boss”. Even though sometimes I wish they did. Nevertheless these principles apply in a workplace where people have more freedom of choice, different type of existential anxieties, unclear reporting lines and blurred hierarchies. In fact they apply in such circumstances even more. Read it, learn it, live it, it will be good for you.

The most helpful book workwise ever

I find it the most actionable of Jocko's library.
It is really specific, short chapters to the point and dedicated each to 1 specific topic.
It helps leaders and sub-ordinates alike because Jocko is specialist in addressing the situation from both points of view.
Unlike many other books, I find this most useful because the author understands the need of keeping a balance. He gets himself into deep water and at the same time helps the listener understand when it is better to err on 1 side and when on the other.
