Summary

Le père Goriot établit les bases de ce qui deviendra un véritable édifice : La Comédie humaine, construction littéraire unique en son genre, avec des liens entre les volumes, des passerelles, des renvois.

Rastignac est un jeune homme de petite noblesse. Il vient à Paris espérant y rencontrer la fortune. Mais il n'a ni l'argent, ni la connaissance de la société parisienne nécessaire. Une de ses cousines lointaines, Madame de Beauséant, une des dernières grandes dames, le prend sous son aile pour l'aider à appréhender ce monde qu'il ne connait pas. Grâce aux femmes, il va apprendre les mœurs de cette société pervertie et en s'adaptant parviendra à en gravir les échelons. Cependant dans ce monde déluré, un homme, le Père Goriot, est l'emblème même du désintéressement. Il se sacrifie pour ses filles, qui en retour ne lui offrent que le mépris. Rastignac, touché par le dévouement de ce père pour ses filles et voyant comment ces dernières le traitent, comprend cependant que malgré lui il devra s'adapter aux coutumes de ces gens et agir comme eux pour parvenir au sommet.

Background music spoils it

Of course it is a great book, and the narrator does a decent job, but the music playing constantly in the background is so annoying, that it just couldn't keep listening. A pity.
