Le guerre civili e la crisi della Repubblica romana racconta di una Roma che da potenza assoluta e incontrastabile del Mediterraneo si trova a dover affrontare tensioni e lotte fratricide al suo interno che condurranno a un progressivo decadimento delle sue strutture di governo. I popoli italici alleati di Roma reclamano l'ottenimento dei diritti di cittadinanza; un sottoproletariato urbano ante litteram, cacciato dalle campagne dall'avida espansione del latifondo, chiede una propria collocazione sociale, trovando nei celebri fratelli Gracchi i propri portavoce; gli schiavi tentano una disperata ribellione duramente repressa nel sangue. Ma questo è anche il periodo di maggiore sviluppo culturale e artistico, soprattutto con l'armonizzazione fra pensiero greco e costumi romani. Nel frattempo, nei luoghi del potere, nomi che segneranno la storia vivono la loro ascesa e la loro caduta: Mario e Silla, Pompeo, Cicerone, Cesare, Antonio, Ottaviano. Quest'ultimo, con il titolo di Augusto, segnerà il passaggio dalla Repubblica al Principato (Impero), dando avvio a un nuovo capitolo della storia di Roma e d'Italia.
