Le fonctionnaire Bachmatchkine passe ses journées à copier des actes, quand une catastrophe vient chambouler sa vie: son manteau, usé jusqu'à la corde, doit être remplacé. Il va falloir économiser pour en acheter un nouveau et cela tourne vite à l'obsession. Le jour où il enfile enfin son nouveau manteau, il rayonne de joie, mais le bonheur ne durera.

Nicolas Gogol (1809-1852) était un auteur russe d'origine ukrainienne et qui est considéré comme étant un des grands écrivains classiques russes. Il est surtout connu pour ses nouvelles (Le Nez, Le Manteau, etc.) et son roman Les Âmes mortes (1842). Gogol voyagea beaucoup durant sa vie, mais dès 1842, après la publication de son roman, il sombre dans la dépression et le mysticisme, et se laisse finalement mourir en 1852 à l'âge de 42 ans. Son œuvre inspira entre autres Mikhaïl Boulgakov lors de l'écriture de Le Maître et Marguerite et Fiodor Dostoïevski.
