Summary
Félix de Vandenesse livre par écrit à sa fiancée les secrets de sa vie passée. Il est le cadet d'une famille aristocratique mais fut délaissé et mal-aimé dès son plus jeune âge. Son honnêteté le conduit à révéler sa rencontre avec Henriette de Mortsauf, qu'il le bouleversa tout jeune homme. La comtesse était mariée et leur relation prendra une tournure ambigüe, à la fois mère de substitution, confidente et femme idéalisée.
Ce roman paru en 1836 passe pour être inspiré par la vie sentimentale de l'auteur. Il s'inscrit dans les Scènes de la vie de campagne du vaste projet de Balzac qu'est La Comédie humaine.
