Hartmann and Fibich met at school and 40 years later they can no more think of living apart than of divorcing their wives. Favourite Brookner so far - she is so perceptive about middle class women and men of my parents’ generation, their ideas and hang ups. She also illuminates some universal truths about how to enjoy life. And Andrew Sachs is superb
