Maria Messina (1887-1944) è tra le scrittrici basilari della storia della letteratura italiana del primo Novecento; è quindi censita in "Le Autrici della Letteratura Italiana".
Grazie all'appoggio di Giovanni Verga, pubblicò novelle e racconti, ma non acquistò mai una grande notorietà. Scrisse il suo ultimo romanzo, questo, nel 1928, colpita dalla sclerosi multipla in stadio avanzato. Il romanzo, come altre sue novelle, tratta delle relazioni d'amore, e della condizione femminile.
