About this listen

In this thrilling and suspenseful fantasy set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Others series, an inn owner and her shape-shifting lodger find themselves enmeshed in danger and dark secrets.

Human laws do not apply in the territory controlled by the Others--vampires, shape-shifters, and even deadlier paranormal beings. And this is a fact that humans should never, ever forget....

After her divorce, Vicki DeVine took over a rustic resort near Lake Silence, in a human town that is not human controlled. Towns such as Vicki's don't have any distance from the Others, the dominant predators who rule most of the land and all of the water throughout the world. And when a place has no boundaries, you never really know what is out there watching you.

Vicki was hoping to find a new career and a new life. But when her lodger, Aggie Crowe--one of the shape-shifting Others--discovers a murdered man, Vicki finds trouble instead. The detectives want to pin the death on her, despite the evidence that nothing human could have killed the victim. As Vicki and her friends search for answers, ancient forces are roused by the disturbance in their domain. They have rules that must not be broken--and all the destructive powers of nature at their command.

A tale of the Others not involving the Lakeside courtyard, this book has some entertaining moments. I enjoyed the kindle version and, having experienced the narrators odd stressing and pauses, decided to download the audiobook.

This is a case of the reading detracting from the story, unfortunately. Alexandra Harris actually reads very clearly, so should be a good narrator and, despite the peculiarities noted above, performed well in the Lakeside books. But said peculiarities seem more pronounced this time, particularly when reading speech. And it's very irritating that the dominant MALE vampire sounds more womanly than his female second..

That notwithstanding, if you're an Others fan you'll enjoy the interactions and typically 'messy' come-uppances,even though the storyline is basic. Alas, no wolves - so we don't have their often hilarious, uncomprehending thoughts to enjoy.

Don't be put off immediately by this review. Listen to the sample and, unless you can't cope, give this a try. You can, after all, return it if you want. I shan't be doing that though.

Entertaining, but..

Great to meet new characters and a new place. This is one of my favourite books and Alexandra Harris does an amazing job as always.

Love the story and narrator. It has been a while since I did listen to the other stories. When starting now it felt like the narrators voice did welcome me back with a warm hug :) guess I really do love that voice. She is so perfect for this stories, otherworldly graceful. Perfect for stories that make you wish for a world where good triumphs.

Thought after the lakeside series finished nothing would be as good. But managed to become equally enthralled by sproing's citizens
