The book is the first part of an expansion of the story Lady Susan by Jane Austen. This edition relays events leading up to Lady Susan Vernon's first letter.

She rides out with Mainwaring, her lover, to see the estate of Sir James Martin, and decides to pursue this gentleman on behalf of her daughter Frederica as an eligible match for her.

Frederica is a reluctant party to her plans and resists Sir James when he has decided he is in love with her. Lady Susan's position in the Mainwaring's household becomes awkward when Mrs. Mainwaring becomes aware of her husband's infatuation.
