Per capire Oscar Wilde si deve considerare un fenomeno singolare. La sua tomba, la più bella e glamour di tutto il Père Lachaise (a Parigi dov'è morto il 30.11.1900), è sempre e invariabilmente la più visitata, quella dove cuori sensibili lasciano più messaggi e infine, particolare non trascurabile, la più baciata. Wilde, pur essendo uno degli autori più letti e citati al mondo, è soprattutto un'icona mistica, un culto. È il Che Guevara del mondo gay. Per creare un mito ci vuole coraggio e un genio uguale o superiore a quello letterario. Coraggio perché uno degli ingredienti del mito è la morte in giovane età, gli altri non sono da meno, dolore, trasgressione, persecuzione, dannazione e resurrezione.
Il genio di Oscar Wilde è riuscito a riunire tutti questi elementi nel processo che lo condannò a due anni di lavori forzati, come sodomita. Aggiunse una passione sapiente quanto irresistibile per un giovane efebo, e un capolavoro scritto in carcere, "De profundis" che è tuttora il vangelo più amato del mondo gay. Morì a 46 anni in uno squallido alberghetto parigino. Funerale povero, naturalmente.
