1968 was an unprecedented year in terms of upheaval on numerous scales: political, military, economic, social, cultural. In the United States, perhaps no one was more undone by the events of 1968 than President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Kyle Longley leads his listeners on a behind-the-scenes tour of what Johnson characterized as the 'year of a continuous nightmare'. Longley explores how LBJ perceived the most significant events of 1968, including the Vietnam War, the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy, and the violent Democratic National Convention in Chicago. His responses to the crises were sometimes effective but often tragic, and LBJ's refusal to seek re-election underscores his recognition of the challenges facing the country in 1968.

As much a biography of a single year as it is of LBJ, LBJ's 1968 vividly captures the tumult that dominated the headlines on a local and global level.

Contains mature themes.

A bit like 1974 for Britain, 1968 was a tumultuous year for the USA and its President. I have read all of Robert Caro's as yet incomplete biography of Johnson and this book covers a time not yet covered in that fantastic series. This is much less ambitious, focusing on a single year and covering just the major events, but even that is a lot of ground. One might expect this book to be dominated by Vietnam, but it appears much less than I expected, perhaps too little given its central role.
Nevertheless there are good descriptions of the key events such as the Pueblo Incident, the fallout from Tet, the assassinations of MLK and RFK, the Democratic Convention (which gets a lot of coverage) and the less well-know Chennault affair. LBJ's "will he/won't he" resignation agonising gets appropriate coverage and I feel that I understand it much better now.
Breezy and in no way as detailed as Caro, but a pacy summary with some reasonable verdicts on one of America's most controversial, complex Presidents.

Fascinating review of America's most turbulent yea

Really enjoyed this clear and insightful review of an incredibly eventful year from the point of view of the White House.

Nicely laid out and great depth of detail

I loved this book, epic in many ways & pretty sad in others. The twisted view through 60s US politics is Vietnam & the way the war was viewed from the White House. The murders of Dr. King & Bobby Kennedy get serious coverage as does LBJs resignation. I thought the narrator was fantastic, giving the story extra quedos. 5*

Unexpectedly good book
