About this listen

Becker is a British traveler in trouble. Madhurima is a rising star police officer. In these three explosive tales, the two join forces to investigate the city’s crooked high society.

On the way, they take on deluded would-be messiahs in search of Mother Teresa’s stolen millions, encounter fanatics, circus freaks and cannibals, fall in and out of love, and pay homage to one of the world’s most beautiful and toughest cities.

Amidst passion, murder and mayhem, is there room for two lovers driven by justice and compassion?

Tom Vater's Kolkata Noir is a riveting crime fiction cycle of three novellas set in the past, the present and the future.

I found this intriguing and pleasant to listen to. I liked the fact that it was three novellas, as opposed to one longer story, and what I found particularly interesting was that in terms of the setting, there was a time span of 20 years between each story. For that reason, each story was slightly different in that way, and I liked that.

One of my favourite things about Kolkata Noir was that each story featured two recurring characters - Madhurima and Becker. Although Kolkata Noir is predominantly crime/mystery, I really enjoyed the suggestion of romance that these two characters brought to the story. Although it seemed that they didn't spend much time together, they seemed to have a bond that was special and powerful, and that was something that I deeply appreciated, and something that appealed to me emotionally.

The ending was, in some ways, not what I was initially hoping for, but at the same time, it was a satisfying ending that provided closure. Overall, I enjoyed listening to this, and I think it was something that I'd enjoy reading as a book too.

I enjoyed these 3 stories. it took me a little while to get into the storyteller's voice but I found it worth sticking with. The 2 main characters, Becker and Madhurima appear in each story and although they don't work together they have a strong bond with a little hint it could go further. The stories are set in different times; past, present and future. The detail of the country and culture really added to the stories for me. Tom Vater's passion for Kolkata comes through this book. Definitely worth listening to our reading.
