About this listen

The Greatcoats have found the heir to the throne...but now they must keep her alive, against all the odds.

Falcio Val Mond has completed the final task given to him by the late King Paelis: he has found the King's Charoites (well, one at least). But his task isn't over, and now he, Kest and Brasti must protect the girl from those who want her dead.

That would be simple enough, if it weren't for the renegade Knights and legendary Dashini assassins getting in their way - not to mention the Dukes, who are desperate to hold on to their power at any cost; Trin, the merciless daughter of the ruthless Duke of Rijou; and the cruel Duchess of Hervor, who is determined to be Queen of Tristia.

Of course, the fact that the heir to the throne is 13 years old doesn't help, nor the fact that every day brings Falcio closer to dying from the poison running through his veins. And then there is the Greatcoat's Lament....

I happened upon The Traitors Blade whilst scrolling through the Audible suggestions and I was tempted by the synopsis and by just a couple of chapters in I was hooked on the Exploits of Falchio.

Story itself is packed with swashbuckling adventure from start to finish but, more than that, the characters are beautifully crafted and complex and incredibly human each with here own back story and history hinted at, making it easy to invest in their fate. The progression through the story is well paced and scene setting, although detailed, never comes over as laborious. The author treats his readers with respect as he creates the world of Tristia for us without spoonfeeding us. it is also a joy (from all the books I have listened to/read of late to find one that is not just a thrilling story but one that is also well written , well structured and grammatically correct.

All of this is pulled together perfectly by great narration. An annoying voice, or mis spoken presentation of an audio book can destroy a story regardless of how good the book is. The narrator in this case however as done an incredible job at making each character distinct. His very natural and seemingly effortless performance is masterful and makes it very easy to lose oneself in the story without the jarring that awkward narration can have.

I have loved the first 2 books in the Greatcoats series and can't wait to hear the next one.

Bravi!

Amazing, gripping and hugely entertaining

Just incredible!!! Read it and find out why, to explain would ruin it and make me no better than the dukes.

Incredible!

The narrator did a brilliant job once again. If anything, he made the book better. The story itself made me roll my eyes several times with its very predictable plot twists. I can't get behind the main character's love story either. But it was engaging enough and I like the world so I'll continue reading the series.

You can see it coming
