Summary

The Greatcoats have found the heir to the throne...but now they must keep her alive, against all the odds.

Falcio Val Mond has completed the final task given to him by the late King Paelis: he has found the King's Charoites (well, one at least). But his task isn't over, and now he, Kest and Brasti must protect the girl from those who want her dead.

That would be simple enough, if it weren't for the renegade Knights and legendary Dashini assassins getting in their way - not to mention the Dukes, who are desperate to hold on to their power at any cost; Trin, the merciless daughter of the ruthless Duke of Rijou; and the cruel Duchess of Hervor, who is determined to be Queen of Tristia.

Of course, the fact that the heir to the throne is 13 years old doesn't help, nor the fact that every day brings Falcio closer to dying from the poison running through his veins. And then there is the Greatcoat's Lament....

Enjoying this series very much

Really thoroughly appreciating this series, everything about it, story, characters, performance, including the swearing. The swearing makes it real.

Bit of a meandering one

Not as good as the first is my main thought here, there was a lot of meandering around in the middle and - although it sort of came together at the end - it just felt too contrived for me. Good book, not amazing though

couldn't stop listening

really enjoyed the story and excellent narration. it was fast paced and had enough intrigue to keep you listening but not overly complicated that you had to concentrate too much. I'm looking forward to listening to the next book.

More of the same, but less satisfying

Endless fights with inevitable victories, because if he lost what would the next 9 hours be about? And endless monologues as he questions his actions, and I mean endless! I liked the first book, this didn’t lack action and twists, but it was still a little tedious.

Fantastic, funny, furious

There's a lot of philosophy in this hilarious book of swashbuckling, intrigue, thrills, sorrows and retribution.

You can see it coming

The narrator did a brilliant job once again. If anything, he made the book better. The story itself made me roll my eyes several times with its very predictable plot twists. I can't get behind the main character's love story either. But it was engaging enough and I like the world so I'll continue reading the series.
