Summary

The Greatcoats have found the heir to the throne...but now they must keep her alive, against all the odds.

Falcio Val Mond has completed the final task given to him by the late King Paelis: he has found the King's Charoites (well, one at least). But his task isn't over, and now he, Kest and Brasti must protect the girl from those who want her dead.

That would be simple enough, if it weren't for the renegade Knights and legendary Dashini assassins getting in their way - not to mention the Dukes, who are desperate to hold on to their power at any cost; Trin, the merciless daughter of the ruthless Duke of Rijou; and the cruel Duchess of Hervor, who is determined to be Queen of Tristia.

Of course, the fact that the heir to the throne is 13 years old doesn't help, nor the fact that every day brings Falcio closer to dying from the poison running through his veins. And then there is the Greatcoat's Lament....

Enjoying this series very much

Really thoroughly appreciating this series, everything about it, story, characters, performance, including the swearing. The swearing makes it real.

Very good second book, but some parts laboured!

Overall this is a very good second book. Builds on the story in the first book, but some parts felt laboured and long winded, and I found myself saying 'for goodness sake get on with it' on more than one occasion. Not a complete spoiler but irritating. Then again there were other parts that were gripping and full of action, really tense and full of twists and turns. Narrator is excellent, so many accents and different voices delivered expertly, so much so that you believe each character exists. In summary well worth a listen.

Graphic gang rape scene :/

Included in this book is a very graphic gang rape scene which I found highly distressing. This review is to warn others off.

it goes into an extreme amount of detail including chopping off limbs in order to stop the woman from resisting the rape.

I am disgusted that content like this was allowed into the book and yet never made it to adult only reading.

Excellent

More twists and turns than a twisty turny thing but so well written I want to go straight to book three.

Joe Jameson rates as one of the best narrators that I have heard.

Very enjoyable listen

Good storyline with lots of twists and turns, starts to delve more into the heritage/ lore of the land which is very interesting. Could do with a few more dives into the history (won’t say what for spoilers).
If you like an enjoyable fantasy where you want to know what’s going to happen next then this is very good. I do love the characters as well

The main characters make me laugh. They are well written and easy to identify with / get behind. Good narrator too.

Buy it

I loved the first book and this only added to the already great story. I bought book 3 before I'd finished this one.
