Opposites attack!
When the Magelord Minalan the Spellmonger’s two apprentices, Tyndal and Rondal, were knighted after the battle of Timberwatch, they were dubbed Knights Magi: A new class of nobility for distinguished High Magi. Designed to combine the pursuit of arcane knowledge with the noble aspirations of chivalry, it elevated them above common warmage...in theory. The problem was they had no idea how to be a Knight Mage...because no one had ever been one before. And as a couple of half-trained rustic apprentices from the Mindens they did not feel up to the task or the high ideals of their title.
But Master Minalan the Spellmonger decided to cure that ignorance. He arranges for Tyndal and Rondal to be tutored and trained together in their new vocation, learning the arts of magic, the craft of warfare, and the subtleties of chivalry from the finest masters in the kingdom.
If they didn’t kill each other, first.
The two young spellmonger’s apprentices from the Minden mountain domain of Boval Vale have much in common: Both had their homes destroyed, they were both sent into exile by the goblin invasion, and they both serve the same master. Yet they could not be more different.
Rondal is quiet, bookish, and introspective, dedicated to the disciplines of academic magic and anticipating a future of study, service, and, perhaps, romance. Tyndal is bold and brash: An extroverted over-achiever with dreams of glory, gold, and girls. Fate, circumstance, and the whims of the gods have forced them together, but the raw emotions of adolescence and the trauma of war put them at each others’ throats with depressing frequency. Master Minalan can’t have that, especially not in his fragile new domain with another baby on the way...so he sends them on the road.
Jealousy, anxiety, passion, and frustration conspire to make them rivals - but if they don’t figure out a way to learn to work together, and quickly, then their stubborn feud could end up affecting the fate of the entire war. Along the way they pick up some enemies, gain a few allies, master a few new skills, and attempt to learn the laws of love. But as they stumble through their lessons and learn to master their tempers they discover that the strongest bonds between men are forged by the most difficult of trials.
For after they become proficient at magic, war, and errantry they are put to the test in the field, the most difficult of circumstances...a mission where the strength of their friendship and the quality of their honor may be what defines them best as - Knights Magi!

This book blows some proper smoke up Ronalds behind
This book had me at a lost being the 4th book because it felt like a 3.5 really. There was a lot of set up and fleshing out character which I did like.
First 1/3 was pretty good I thought but the middle to late end with some minor good bits was kinda boring and annoying. Half way though the book had me hating Ron for being a dick. I feel that Tin did not deserve the hate the author gave him and almost every ten min was raising Ron and putting down Tin. I skip almost 3 hours of the book. I did this when Ron pass the mist trials and met back up with Tim and began to study at the war collage. This whole part was boring and felt awkward. More pointless saying how shit Tim was and just amazing Ron is at everything now.
Maybe I just had the idea in my head that Tin is a better Warmage and Ron the better tactician the thinker and it does kinda turn into that later in the book. This was a book was a love letter to Ron over coming his weakness and better the school bully “Tin” . It didn’t make sense Tin has been fighting his way though hords of goblins risking his life and practicing swordsmanship and war magic and Ron playing with stones. To then Ron beating Tin in sword play with a few weeks of training? Tin has seen and been at the Center of far more battle and duel than Ron. To than lose to Ron does not make sense. A few weeks of training to be a solider and some studies at the war collage, should not close the gap in fight so much in such a short time. If what the author is trying to say is that Ron’s only weakness to becoming great was confidents i find laughable. Actual combat is better training than the theory of combat. I still kinda hate Ron by the end even when the author is trying so hard to make you like him. Then the two make up and become friends let the bromance begin.
I know what military training is. It taken me 30 weeks and by the end I still felt like I had no clue what I was doing. So I can even relate to how Ron felt and acted and even transformed into a man. But the time frame for him felt to sort to have these changes and to then become a command/officer in that time as well. Well it’s just to much even for hero’s if my opinion if that even matter to you.

This book allowed the characters of the Spellmonger to be developed in their own right. A shorter book but I really enjoyed it

Another masterpiece!
The boys make good ! Exciting twist to the ongoing sorry-line. Good twists and turns leaving you excited to get on to book 5!

Good storytelling..
The author knows how to spin an enjoyable yarn.. Consistently good storytelling.. Looking forward to the next book in the series..

Probably my favourite book of the series
I find this book entertaining every time I read it. This must have been at least my forth time! I like the way we see the two young mage lords start to mature and the antics they get up to.

Rondal and Tyndal make a porno
not really quite as sordid as the headline but definitely a theme in this one more than others. all in all another strong book in the series brilliantly narrated as always!
