Summary
The last war was fought with weapons unimaginable....
A war was fought. Humanity lost.
Time for a rematch.
The world fell, the invaders won, and demons now ruled what had once been man's domain. The great works of a once powerful civilization lie in ruins, its people having forgotten the wonders of their forefathers as they now live in the yoke. Not everyone is willing to go quietly into the endless night, however, and for every inch of ground they'd won, they had paid in blood and bone. At the end of it all, however, the demons stood victorious and all that was left to accomplish was the final cleanup of the human pests that infested occasional parts of the conquered world.
In one nearly uninhabitable part of that world, a very young such pest has come of age and, without understanding what it means, she walks in the shadow of destiny.
The demons have a lesson to learn, one last to be taught to them by humans, before they can call this world truly their own.
A cleansing fire can start from the smallest of sparks...and it is always darkest just before the dawn.

Juvenile style - Losing Interest
Cassandra Campbell has a good voice. If the writing was better she would probably have turned this book around.
The story was quite flat. The characters, including the protagonist, lacked depth. I have already forgotten her name and I turned off the recording five minutes ago.
Also annoying was the sudden point of view changes. That works if you have sections devoted to the character. But telling the reader about the thoughts and memories of a secondary character when the main person is the subject just irritates.

Fascinating
I loved it. It's a different story to what I've ever read and yet highly addictive. Can't wait to get the next one.

not my cup of tea
I afraid struggled to finish this. It seemed to me like everything that happened in the entire book should have happened within the first few chapters and that there should have been more to it. It was bland, the characters were flat and the whole thing seemed very underdeveloped. It was my first attempt at this type of post apocalypse genre and I'm afraid I wasn't impressed. I've just been reading the Gravediggers son which is centred around demons also, but more medieval and is absolutely fanstastic. This just didn't work for me and fell flat.

decent story, rattles along
well paced yarn, with some interesting characters, albeit a little clichéd. there are good twists and turns in the plot, and a few surprises. the reader works very well with the material she is given, also, but overall the tale is let down by some very average writing and a lack of originality as it follows a very well trodden path.

Evan Currie is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. this new collection has the potential to be as good as his other stories and that's great news

Excellent performance
Excellent performance all to often a good story is made unbearable by a poor narator. This was a good story made better by Ms Campbell.

My favourite book so far
I was totally addicted to this well written, immersive story, spending every spare minute listening. The characters were so well described, I felt like I knew them
I also loved this narrator, who not only brought the story to life, but also each character
I was a little disappointed when it ended, but it didn’t leave the story on a huge cliffhanger, and for that I’m thankful. There are 2 more books in the series, I hope they’re as good
