For sheer storytelling delight and pure adventure, Treasure Island has never been surpassed. From the moment young Jim Hawkins first encounters the sinister Blind Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn until the climactic battle for treasure on a tropic isle, the nevel creates scenes and characters that have firetd the imaginations of generations of readers. Written by a superb prose stylist, a master of both action and atmosphere, the story centers upon the conflict between good and evil - but in this case a particularly engaging form of evil.

Story
Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719, was Defoe’s first novel and survives as his best-known work. Loosely based on a true account of a Scottish sailor—Alexander Selkirk—it is a tale of one man’s fall from grace and progress to redemption. The account of Crusoe’s life, scratched out with rationed indigo ink on a dwindling supply of paper salvaged from the hull of a wrecked ship, speaks eloquently of the tenacity and ingenuity of the human spirit.

Story
A savage and hilarious satire, Gulliver's Travels sees Lemuel Gulliver shipwrecked and adrift, subject to bizarre and unnerving encounters with - among others - quarrelling Lilliputians, philosophising horses, and the brutish Yahoo tribe that change his view of humanity - and himself - forever. Swift's classic of 1726 portrays mankind in a distorted hall of mirrors as a diminished, magnified, and finally, bestial species, presenting us with a comical yet uncompromising reflection of ourselves.

Story
Left unfinished after Dickens died in 1870, The Mystery of Edwin Drood centers on Edwin Drood’s uncle, John Jasper, and his love for Rosa Bud, Edwin’s fiancée. Set in the dark, fictional cathedral city of Cloisterham, the novel is awash with guilt, disguise and mystery. It contains some fine writing, and just before his death, Dickens left an indication of where the plot was going, which is included.

An Excellent Narration
- By Segovian on 19-04-19

An excellent narration of a much-loved book
I have really enjoyed listening to David Rintoul's narration of one of my favourite books. Being a Scot myself, I would not contemplate listening to any of RLS's works that are set in Scotland where these are not read by someone who is also native Scot and is therefore capable of accurately reproducing the relevant accents. I have heard literary and TV adaptations of Scottish books ruined far too many times by non-Scottish actors operating under an illusion that they can do a Scottish accent. The results are invariably pretty sore on the ears. This version brought back memories of Rintoul's performance as David Balfour in Catherine Czerkawska's hugely enjoyable 1980s adaptation. This is the definitive reading and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Kidnapped
I loved this book! I love R.L Stevenson's books. He writes fantastic adventures. Treasure Island was such a gem that I craved more of his high adventure, swashbuckling tales. The story is excellent. The characters are so well done. You feel the friendship between David and Alen by the end. Also the narration of he book and the narrator himself is awesome. He brings the story alive in setting that I wasn't used to (Scottish Highlands) and does the voices so well.
