Özet

A darkly gothic thriller from best-selling author Sarah Gailey.

'Come home.' Vera's mother called and Vera obeyed. In spite of their long estrangement, in spite of the memories—she's come back to the home of a serial killer. Back to face the love she had for her father and the bodies he buried there, beneath the house he'd built for his family.

Coming home is hard enough for Vera, and to make things worse, she and her mother aren't alone. A parasitic artist has moved into the guest house out back and is slowly stripping Vera's childhood for spare parts. He insists that he isn't the one leaving notes around the house in her father's handwriting...but who else could it possibly be?

There are secrets yet undiscovered in the foundations of the notorious Crowder House. Vera must face them and find out for herself just how deep the rot goes.

Gripping story, interesting mind of the character and even when you think you have an idea of where it is going, it still managed to surprise.

Interesting Unfolding Story

Quite an intriguingly dark book. I don't tend to like entity-type novels, more real-life and believable happenings but this was done in a very clever way which made me feel creeped out (in a good way) for a lot of the book! interesting father/daughter relationship is portrayed.

Gripped me and kept me intrigued.

I loved the thrill of the story. it kept me reading East to follow and I enjoyed the book.

The main characters mother was the evil one in the end.

I’ll start by saying that the audiobook performance is flawless. The novel itself is almost flawless, too. My only real issue with it is that the protagonist falls a little flat. She’s not likeable or even hateable enough to be interesting, she’s just… there. Like a necessary conduit for all of the interesting stuff to unfold around. That being said, I was fully gripped and couldn’t wait for my next listening session. Truly a phenomenal horror novel that made me feel icky in the best sort of way.

Nearly perfect

More like a 3.5. This was a really enjoyable horror story, with some fantastic family dynamics at play. The split timeline is used effectively and builds the mystery up nicely.

My main issue is with the reveal. There are tiny hints and suggestions throughout at what could be happening and it leads you to believe something else is going to happen. And while I’m happy that it didn’t tumble into the suspected cliche it was hinting at, I don’t think the actual reveal was telegraphed well enough to land. I feel it needed to be introduced earlier to land much more believably.

But overall, I certainly will remember this cast of characters and its story. A fantastic performance also.

A brilliant concept, slightly let down by pace
