Story
Ari had a game plan for life: shoot people. Get money. Hang out with fellow criminal friends. He saw absolutely no reason to change that plan until one dark night in Memphis, when a little girl reached out to him with pocket change and a desperate plea for him to help her. Adopting an abused little girl off the streets was, needless to say, not part of the plan. Ari had no idea what he was doing with an eight year old. He especially didn’t know how to juggle taking contracts and raising a little girl.

Ren’s homecoming wish list includes: Arman not bashing everyone’s heads together (at least not without him), getting the fortress built before the Mongs attack (not at the rate they’re going with all the the thefts happening), and going home without incident (also, again, not likely). What it did not include was: Social reform, a child, araiding party, and rman actually using his words. Life once again proved reality is better than fantasy, and Ren couldn’t be happier.Except for the Mongs. He could do without the Mongs.

When you can talk to ghosts, things are bound to get spirited. The ghosts have been there since before I can remember. When I was a kid, they doted on me, but as I got older, they got more demanding. I’ve spent my whole life seeing and talking to dead people and trying to pretend I’m not, because the living just don’t understand. Nobody wants to be around the freak who claims to see ghosts. Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

Getting into the vampire-only detective unit was the easy part. What’s going to be more difficult is dealing with my new partner - an ancient vampire who keeps threatening to eat me. The unit has never had a human in it. Marcus - or, as I like to call him: Fangy McFangface - would really prefer to keep it that way. He’s grumpy, short-tempered, and broody, but I have a way with words, and I know he’s starting to like me, even if he swears he’s not.

After half a century of chaos, my retirement from leading the Community of Species Government has been bliss. No more hellhounds playing pranks. No more snippy demons demanding my attention. No more cajoling money from the wealthy to support the community. Just peace while I avoid my overbearing father and try to work out my next steps. Although...maybe three years of peace is enough. It might even be starting to get boring. In fact, an adolescent dragon crash-landing on my landlord's shed is just the kind of excitement I need - especially when he brings his species leader to my door.

Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense.

“You are the savior of mankind” are the last words I ever expected to hear while nibbling on fries. The thing is, I’m not mankind saving material. I don’t even have magic (and just found out it exists). I’m the most boring, normal(ish) human ever. Suddenly, I’m being tossed right into the middle of a fight that started years before I was even born, and then I get partnered up with Alastair, a quirky magical Guardian. He is rather attractive and sweet when he’s not into the whole “woe is me, I can’t let myself fall in love with you” nonsense.

Summary
Proposing vs. defusing a bomb?
Defusing a bomb is much easier than proposing.
Defusing Donovan’s anger over getting on a plane to defuse said bomb? Harder than the bomb.
Jon is not liking these odds.
Is proposing supposed to be this difficult?
Tags: Jon and Donovan have a fight, as expected they’re very bad at it, things go BOOM, my kink is healthy processing and expressing of emotions, relationship lessons, life lessons, love is not based on worth, the dads are awesome, I put Jon on a plane, because I’m evil that way, personal space? What’s that?, cats, Jon has a new toy, no I’m not talking about Donovan, the bomb squad is ready to just keep Jon, roadtrip!, grandparents also rock, absolutely nothing goes according to plan

Great characters and good narration
I love this series and would recommend that the series is read in order to get the most out of Jon and Donovans story. The world where psychics are real and recognised is interesting and the love story is so heart-warming. With the narration I struggled initially with Donovans voice as he sounded very different in my head but the narration definitely grew on me until I stopped noticing.

Good Series
I really like this series and characters. It might be a bit nit picky, but it is frustrating when different characters from different backgrounds and regions use the exact same speech patterns, metaphors, sayings, behaviors (like low whistles). It is exceptionally unlikely from a linguistics standpoint & distracts from the story. Also, unsure if this author has ever had cats, but cats don't need to be trained and it is rare for a kitten to have to be taught how to use a litter box. I agree adult cats are important to adopt, but she wrote about kittens like they were puppies.

This book blew my mind!
As a huge fan of Mr. Sherwood, I was waiting excitedly for this audiobook because I loved so much the written version. I haven't been so enthralled for any book in a long, long time. This new story in Jon's Mysteries Case's series caught me so tight that I couldn't let go until discovering what was going to happen. I simply couldn't stop reading until the wonderful end. I promise no spoil anything for you so I just want to say that this book includes some highly expected new characters, lovely cats, and the scenes were so exciting and amazing that page after page I cried, and sighed, and cried again because the perfect dialogues, situations, heartwarming moments and all the action that made my heart bleed. At the end I am sure that the last chapter would be worth of every wait, every sigh and every tear you shed. Regarding the narration, Mr. Thomas made a wonderful job with his performance ensuring his reading reflected all the emotions written in the pages. This book really blew my mind!! Loved it so much!!

Good solid comfort story with mystery and action!
This is a continuation of a series, where the main characters feel like good old friends. Their romance is sweet, but becomes rocky in their first ever fight. There are bombs, a terrifying airplane ride, mystery, cats, and wedding bells on the horizon. I like the overall plot, and the “who-dunnit” is a mystery right up to the end. Lots of good stuff packed into an engaging book filled with characters we know and love.
