About this listen

Librarian Syd Murphy flees the carnage of a failed marriage by accepting an 18-month position in Jericho - a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. Her plans to hide out and heal her wounds fall by the wayside as she gets drawn into the daily lives of the quirky locals. She becomes fast friends with Maddie Stevenson, the enigmatic physician who has returned to the backcountry community to take over her late father's medical practice. Together they learn that life and love can have as many twists and turns as a country road.

The central characters of Syd and Maddie, and there love story, is supported by a great cast. Gay best friend, parents and town folk. A coming out story, as well as lots of complex emotions besides. Lots of drama and unfolding events, makes this more than a predictable lesfic. Well written, with psychological insights, humour , a great read/listen.

Wow, great cast of characters, in depth story

I really enjoyed this story, although it’s slightly overwritten and would benefit from tighter editing. I think we got the fact that Syd had lovely short blonde hair and Maddy is drop dead gorgeous very early on, but there’s a tendency to repeat descriptions and overuse of adverbs. But, that aside, the story, characters and settings are interesting enough to overlook the slight irritation.

I was never quite sure how things were going to pan out. Broken relationships, new relationships, ongoing friendships, a cast of diverse characters and a New England setting that felt real. Great narration and I’m looking forward to listening to the follow up, Aftermath.

Compelling story of life and love

Loved the narration. Found the MC engaging and their family and friends, plus Henry and Pete, welcome additions to the storyline.
I look forward to Aftermath.
