Story
In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Story
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

According to mythology, mankind used to live in 'The Tranquiline Halls': heaven. But then the Voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. Men took root on Roshar, the world of storms, but the Voidbringers followed. The Almighty gave men powerful suits of armor and mystical weapons, the Shardblades. Led by 10 angelic Heralds and 10 orders of knights known as Radiants, mankind finally won (or so the legends say).

Summary
Two crime families, one source of power: Jade.
Shortlisted for the Nebula Awards 2018
Shortlisted for the Locus Awards 2018
An Amazon.com Best Book of the Month
Jade is the lifeblood of the city of Janloon - a stone that enhances a warrior's natural strength and speed. Jade is mined, traded, stolen and killed for, controlled by the ruthless No Peak and Mountain families.
When a modern drug emerges that allows anyone - even foreigners - to wield jade, simmering tension between the two families erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all in the families, from their grandest patriarch to even the lowliest motorcycle runner on the streets.
Jade City is an epic tale of blood, family, honour, and of those who live and die by ancient laws in a changing world.

Gang Conflict & Grounded Magic
A brilliant level of subtle and steady world building brings you into a world where great power comes from the possession of Jade, centred around an Asian setting in a mid-20th century world.
Meanwhile, clans led by families of powerful Jade users battle in sometimes subtle and sometimes blatent and bloody ways for control of the city. This is a place where the "mobs" operate openly and for the most part legtimately.
The "magic" is surprisingly grounded and the users manage to be both seen powerful whilst still incredibly mortal. Fights matter and their rules are quickly easy to understand. And importantly, wounds matter.
Whilst the setting is restrained this truly feels like epic fantasy, but the pacing makes sense. Events happen over the course of months, rather than this being one of those "wow, wild couple of weeks we've had" stories.
The politics and action are beautifully balanced and the narrator gives each character enough personality to come to life in front of you easily, truly speaking with their voice.

Awesome crime drama
Excellent plot, world building and characters. If you enjoy crime dramas like Peaky Blinders then this is a must read.
Writing style is a bit "functional" at times, there isn't a lot of flavour to descriptions and often there isn't much subtely. Not a deal breaker but it does occasionally take me out of the story.
Narration is excellent.
