Story
On the island of Kekon, the Kaul family is locked in a violent feud for control of the capital city and the supply of magical jade that endows trained Green Bone warriors with supernatural powers they alone have possessed for hundreds of years. Beyond Kekon's borders, war is brewing. Powerful foreign governments and mercenary criminal kingpins alike turn their eyes on the island nation. Jade, Kekon's most prized resource, could make them rich - or give them the edge they'd need to topple their rivals.

Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best - the meanest, dirtiest, most feared and admired crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld. Jackal is proud to be a Grey Bastard, member of a sworn brotherhood of half-orcs. Unloved and unwanted in civilized society, the Bastards eke out a hard life in the desolate no-man's-land called the Lots, protecting frail and noble human civilization from invading bands of vicious full-blooded orcs. But as Jackal is soon to learn, his pride may be misplaced. Because a dark secret lies at the heart of the Bastards' existence - one that reveals a horrifying truth behind humanity's tenuous peace with the orcs, and exposes a grave danger on the horizon.

Summary
Two crime families, one source of power: Jade.
Shortlisted for the Nebula Awards 2018
Shortlisted for the Locus Awards 2018
An Amazon.com Best Book of the Month
Jade is the lifeblood of the city of Janloon - a stone that enhances a warrior's natural strength and speed. Jade is mined, traded, stolen and killed for, controlled by the ruthless No Peak and Mountain families.
When a modern drug emerges that allows anyone - even foreigners - to wield jade, simmering tension between the two families erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all in the families, from their grandest patriarch to even the lowliest motorcycle runner on the streets.
Jade City is an epic tale of blood, family, honour, and of those who live and die by ancient laws in a changing world.

Gang Conflict & Grounded Magic
A brilliant level of subtle and steady world building brings you into a world where great power comes from the possession of Jade, centred around an Asian setting in a mid-20th century world.
Meanwhile, clans led by families of powerful Jade users battle in sometimes subtle and sometimes blatent and bloody ways for control of the city. This is a place where the "mobs" operate openly and for the most part legtimately.
The "magic" is surprisingly grounded and the users manage to be both seen powerful whilst still incredibly mortal. Fights matter and their rules are quickly easy to understand. And importantly, wounds matter.
Whilst the setting is restrained this truly feels like epic fantasy, but the pacing makes sense. Events happen over the course of months, rather than this being one of those "wow, wild couple of weeks we've had" stories.
The politics and action are beautifully balanced and the narrator gives each character enough personality to come to life in front of you easily, truly speaking with their voice.

blown away somewhat
I liked the vibe as soon as I started but assumed it was just 'The Godfather' plus Sopranos elements with a cool surface level facelift. there are definitely similarities with Puzo's writing style but as it went on, the characters took on such complexity and nuance, I don't feel it's overstating it to say Tolstoy couldn't do much better. I was really really pleasantly surprised. the narrator fitted perfectly and did a
great job.

3 stars overall because the narrator is great
I heard so many good things about this book and maybe I went into it with too high expectations. Unfortunately the book didn't live up to these for me.
I couldn't find a single character that I liked and because of this I found that I didn't care about the story at all.
I wasn't a big fan of the world either. The fact that magic even existed in this world felt out of place. I believe I felt like this because the magic system is not really explained. Basically you hold jade you have powers if you have the affinity for it. And the powers you get are just strangely convenient for the situation you are in. It might be explained more in future books but I was really missing a deeper dive into the magic system.
The narrator did an amazing job with it. I really enjoyed his performance.

The Sopranos For Fantasy Fans
I loved this book !. I love me some epic fantasy and I'm well versed in western inspired fantasy. But I love Asian mythology and love the new trend though it's still relatively small in number of Asian inspired fantasy books, which is slowly but surely growing. When I hear a new fantasy series is based in a steam age, western or modern era I start to worry, I've seen it done badly so many times with shallow characters. This massively shattered that trend the world is not explained in the depth of a Tolkien, Martin or Jordan but the immediate world is extremely well described and easy to envision, particularly for anime fans of movies and shows like Akira and Cowboy Bebop. If you love a gangster epic this is definitely worth your time with characters as rich and flawed as any ASOIAF as well as Goodfellas, The Godfather and The Sopranos. I loved all the influences from Triad and Yakuza culture a great blend of these criminal organisations for the gangland in this book. We have fantastically flawed characters as well as the morally bankrupt. Fonda Lee never forgets these characters are criminals and doesn't shy away from their brutality, their ruthlessness and their willingness to engage in deplorable acts. She covers everything from how these criminal organisations get started usually from political strife. She handles foreign importation and corruption, she deals with drug addiction, dependency and self medication. She even manages to touch on mental illness, sexual predators and PTSD. She describes the perfect moral compromise between loyalty to family and honour as well as the cost of honour when your family's honour is compromised or completely lacking. Can't praise this book enough check it out if you like anything I just said, I cannot wait to see where she goes with all this.
