Summary

FBI Special Agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar have received a special off-the-books assignment: build a secret file on Jack Reacher. In this short story, Otto and Gaspar reveal a bit of themselves as they make every effort to put Jack in a Box using legal means John Grisham fans admire. Lee Child and Jack Reacher fans know that no one boxes with Jack and lives to tell about it. Will Otto and Gaspar be the first to succeed where so many have failed?

Critic reviews

"Full of thrills and tension, but smart and human, too. Kim Otto is a great, great character - I love her." (Lee Child, author of the Jack Reacher series)

Excellent short story but overpriced as it’s short!

While I really enjoyed this short story I was a bit miffed that I had to give a whole credit for it.

Slow Pace, simple to follow, but don't pause it!

This is a lovely 'The Hunt for Reacher' novel by Diane Capri, unfortunately the recent App updates totally ruin the book!

Essentially, if you pause it, for whatever reason, you lose it! It is completely taken off your listening library. You have to download it all over again & your bookmarks will have all been erased! It's a totally irritating, annoying and frustrating flaw within the App. If it's not remedied by the time I've completed the 3rd book in the series, then I'm quitting my Audible subscription & going elsewhere!

A company that's underwritten by Amazon can afford not to waste my time and money! <Sigh>

Not worth the credit.

Short story only 1 hr long. I really don't like the narrators voice. Very monotone, kind of robotic. Not much to the story.

This is a Test

I've now read all three of Diane Capri's looking for Jack Reacher novellas and enjoyed them enough to try the two long play selections in the series. In this story they approach an accident on the highway and find the Vice President's daughter and grandchild and a corpse; made that way by one Jack Reacher. The man caused an accident and then attacked the woman, not counting on Reacher.
Agent Otto makes a brief trip back to Wisconsin to visit her dying (again) grandmother and is reminded once again that having a Vietnamese mother distances her from her blonde haired blue eyed German cousins.
A good short story; a format that fits the series well.

TERRIFIC but realize it's a 'short story'

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely. It's a continuation of a great series.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Otto and Gaspar tie. They are perfect for each other.

What does Kelley Hazen and Storyteller Productions bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her delivery of the piece, like in Don't Know Jack, is just spot on to the intention of the story. A clean, no-nonsense, direct, unemotional presentation. Very straightforward as one expects the FBI to be. I can't imagine anyone else narrating these.

Who was the most memorable character of Jack in a Box and why?

There aren't a lot of characters in this short story. I like the agent from Dallas that they come into contact with briefly. I like Capri's strong women.

Any additional comments?

I like the use of short story to give us a brief episode in the series. It's a nice diversion from a full length listen.

Read it don't listen, narrator is not a good one

I'd read this on Kindle but I have to say the narrator isn't who I would have picked, she sounds like she is 70yrs old and this is a story that needs a voice that is mid 20's, also the story just leaves you hanging.

Bad narration

Hated the stilted narration! Made it difficult to listen. The storyline was interesting and the book good in spite of this.

my fault, I guess

I didn't realize it was a short story. I like the idea, but the "building a file" trope isn't strong enough to make me want to keep reading.

over played

To much build up of one character and not the other. not enough build up of the story line.

Great story but...

This a great story. I like agent Otto, but this story wasn’t about their hunt for Reacher at all. I thought this story was going to be like the first book, a follow up on a Jack Reacher story, but it wasn’t, despite the description saying it would be. This doesn’t need to be about Jack Reacher, these two characters can stand on their own and have great adventures.

Teaser Hunt

Otto and Carlos are interesting and I love the tie in with JR, strangely due to the tease of the anticipated but fruitless confrontation with Reacher. The two determined professionals are relentlessly tracking a fugitive that is the ultimate hero.
